Bulding a cattle guard.
I want to have a cattle guard made for the entrance of our privada and have a few questions.
Is there any real need for a pit under it and if so, what is it and how deep.
How far apart should the pipes be?
Also, how wide should it be?
And lastly; how can I make it so the cattle won't/can't cross it but we can walk over it?
It will be metal and welded.
I haven't been able to find any specific plans on Google yet.
Thanks.

Re: Bulding a cattle guard.
Sorry I have to share this. Many years ago Rep Pat Schroeder (CO) added a small line item to the budget to pay for a few dozen cattle guards at the request of a Colorado County low on funds and hard hit by floods. Newt Gingrich, then Speaker of the House, called her office to complain about spending money to hire people to watch cattle. Her office failed to enlighten him and he actually ranted about hiring guards for cows on the floor of the House of Representatives.

Actually, painted parallel stripes on the road will work too.

Fools, tomorrow when the OP asks for advice on building a dog house or boiling an egg I'm sure you'll all be there with links and suggestions.

Hmmmm.... if that works.... then it follows that you could do the same for a perimeter instead of a fence? Just be sure your home owner's insurance is paid up.

The OP neglected to state that the cattle guard couldn't cost any money. So even paint and other supplies are probably out!

I agree with viajero. Either the OP is incrediably ignorant and/or helpless or he really enjoys yanking your chains.
