Passport expired-Please help!!!! Empty Passport expired-Please help!!!!

Post by MtnButterfly Sun May 12, 2013 1:35 pm

Well I did it this time. I accidentally let my passport expire thinking it was due for renewal in 2015. It expired in May 2012 and still when I applied for my "residente temporal", they issued it with no problems. I'm just sick about this as we are getting ready to leave back to the States VERY soon and now don't know if after the long trip to Laredo, if they will allow me back into the States with the expired passport. I researched as much as I could on the Internet for what to do and did find that it shouldn't be a problem with a current picture ID, (assuming a drivers license). I'm still waiting on my extention on my drivers license, to arrive from the States and of course it has been months already and no word from them so my drivers license is expired also. (That was not intentional). The more I read on the internet, the more upset I get and then can't even make any sense of what I'm reading. I cried my heart out all morning yesterday and today am in better condition to contact all of you out there. I know this was really stupid and negligent on my part but I can guarentee, if I make it through this one, it won't ever happen again. Please help with some advise. About 4 years ago, I had an expired and misplaced Passport. When the US Postal Service mishandled, misplaced or simply lost my paperwork, I resorted to one of the commercial expeditors in Houston, TX:
http://www.visaexpress.net/
While it certainly wasn't inexpensive, everything was processed efficiently and exactly on time as their website promises.

You might try contacting them? That is if you are referring to a US Passport?

It was a renewal, you should check their web site for availabilty of appointments,I'm pretty sure they can expedite things for a fee.

I thought you could return on an expired passport, though that might have changed.
Getting in to another country was another matter.
I once returned on an expired State Department passport, but that was long ago!

As long as you have sufficient ID to prove your Identity, you should have no problems....
The US can't refuse a Citizen Re-Entry...
It's for Travelling Purposes where you'll run into problems...including here in Mexico
Call your Consulate start the process to renew the document... they will likely issue a receipt or a temporary document showing application is in process...

Consulate takes 2 weeks. Pay an extra $200US for a US expedite service and you will have your new passport in 2 days.

I had to fly back to France on an expired passport ( I am French) and I had no problem although the consulate told me that the hang up could be from the airline.
I had to get a new passport while in France before I could come back.

If you go to the Consulate to renew the passport, keep this in mind. You must have made an appointment online first. I had a terrible time with this, as well as getting through on the phone. In that case you can contact one of the counselors and they will meet you at the door early in the morning and get you in on an "emergency basis". If you have gotten this far, remember that you cannot take ANYTHING in there except your documents. No keys, no cellphones, absolutely nothing but the documents. Make sure you have the correct type of passport photos. If you have to check a purse, you pay for that across the street. Sketchy in my opinion. There is no extra fee for having let the passport expire. If you need the email address of a Counselor, PM me.

Thank you all for your answers and advise. We went to Guad. yesterday and was told to say it was on an "emergency basis" which it was, and we got in the same day. Only took 1½ hours which really impressed me as I was prepared for all day. Just the regular fees were charged plus the small cost of having it delivered in 2 to 3 weeks. Now I just need to wait and pack. You all have been so helpful and I appreciate everyones help.
lilikoi, you are so right, exactly to the T the way it all happened when we got there.
