The latest build of Picasa (3.9.0, Build 136.x) has a massive bug that prevents the user from accessing the GMail Contacts list when emailing an image. Uninstalling and putting in a previous version fixes it. Then turn off 'automatically download updates'.

I don't know if this happens with other email clients.
