Just in time for the crowds: police from Guadalajara have put up a raten (sp?) in front of the 7-11 in Riberas.

And the day or two before a bunch of cops were in Ajijic doing something near
the auditorium. Didn't look em in the eye so I have no idea who they were.

Yeah, in front of 7-11...they are looking for drunks and seatbelt violators. Equal opportunity , by the way. One car was being towed away for some reason. They had 4 cars pulled over when we went by last night.
It helps to roll down your window to give them a better look,. A smile and a wave doesn't hurt either.

Seatbelts DO save lives, I support their drive to ensure people are belted.

We drove by it yesterday and they were checking seatbelts, and they also pulled over a motorcyclist that didn't have a helmet on.

Pulled me over just now (before 3pm) in front of the 7-11; two kinds of cop vehicles that I could see... but then sent me on my way without more than a glance. Much better than going in the Ajijic direction, where I could see even three Federale trucks fighting the amazingly-long lineup of traffic.

These retenes one might encounter along the carretera between, say, La Cristina on the west and Eastern Riberas just before entering Chapala proper, can be avoided normally by driving this route through the village avoiding the carretera altogether. This will add a little time to the drive but, what the hell, most of us are retired and driving about aimlessly anyway.
