Aduana is proposing to limit TIPs to 180 days for Visitantes only.
Residentes (temp or perm) would lose their TIPs.

Still sounds pretty iffy Rolly. He seemed unsure and he's the only person to report it. If true there has to be a whole lot of other info with it

It appears to me, that the goal is to discourage full time residency. I can drive my Mexican plated vehicle to US, no issue, just need insurance, no fee for entry! If the new law passes, I can't drive my US plated car into Mexico, being a permanent resident of Mexico.......?

Don't get it....please shed more light on a screwed up situation....Jim W

Scroll down the page, there's a link to a transcript. Seems pretty clear to me.

This should get rid of a bunch more gringos.

Please re-read this as I've had a few and headed for bed. InterCam is usually pretty up on things

Again, we stress that the only immigration condition at this moment, that can be used for the temporary importation of vehicles or motorhomes is:

1.- Visitor (tourist)

http://intercamfinancialservices.com/foreign-citizen-applications-before-mexican-customs/

That is new importation .... any grandfathered positions?

What seems rediculous about it is you couldn't get your Temporal up north and drive down. It has to be a joke or misprint

They might change all the rules tomorrow along with INM Rules on financial requirements.

Why bother talking about this issue until someone of knowledge like Spencer posts something. Get it from the horses mouth not the horses ...

Jim, what would the U.S. Customs officials say if you told them you were a US resident trying to enter the US with a Mexican plated vehicle? I can tell you that there would be a major problem at the Canadian border for a Canadian resident. If in fact these are the new rules, I believe they are in accord with US and Canadian rules. It is virtually impossible for a US or Canadian resident to import a vehicle into the US or Canada that was manufactured for sale in Mexico. There is a list produced by the governments, and I believe that no vehicles manufactured for original sale in Mexico are on the list, even if they were manufactured in the US or Canada.

Non-residents are able drive into the US and Canada with Mexican plated vehicles, but, at least in Canada, it is illegal for a resident to even drive that vehicle unless the non-resident is in the vehicle.

So, perhaps not so screwed up a situation for Mexico, just catching up with the protectionist laws of the US and Canada.

Want screwed-up laws, Nevada state law requires anyone visiting Nevada with a vehicle with an out-of-state plate, for longer than 30 days in a calendar year, to obtain a Nevada plate.

So, I was at the lawyers today and I asked about the new foreign plated car laws, specifically, if they thought aduana would relax the law for foreign plated cars that have been in the country for years and they said no. They felt aduana would never back off of an opportunity to make more money.

I think that's probably true.

I think that's probably true.

But they would stand to make a substantial amount by offering a 1 time legalization to the foreigners who would otherwise return the cars to the USA. Not sure if I buy their (lawyers) reasoning.
