The Shalimar Club
After 12 year of living here, I have finally figured out this Lakeside Place. It´s the Shalimar Club at Shalimar , Florida circa 1953 with pianist and unfunny comedian Big Tiny Little on stage and little Hound Dog with a Shirley Temple pretending it was an adult highball and mommy and daddy enjoying their gins and tonic before driving the fancy new 1953 Ford Fairlane back to Mary Esther after a dinner of steaks and potatoes with sweet tea. Yes, I realize now that I have simply returned to the fantasy I sought during the dreams of my youth. Here I am, back in Shalimar and Mary Esther and everybody is drinking Shirley Temples and eating cotton candy and daddy is telling me, "Don´t worry son, some day you´ll live full time in paradise and then, ipsofacto, I´m here. Another Shirley Temple. por favor and a Joe and John pizza.

CHILLIN:
How the hell did you know I love (or better put, loved) Peggy Lee and that that is my favorite song of hers. I take it you and seisdedos figured out where I was coming from with that silly post about the Shalimar Club in, get this, Niceville, Florida (no I am not making that up - Niceville) and Mary Esther, Florida just down the road where we summered each year in the 50s from our home up the road in Alabama. Both Niceville and Mary Esther were and are situated on attractive estuarine bodies of water and were filled with retirees drinking gins and tonic since that was the 50s. They´re all dead now and soon we´ll be joining them and that´s all there is, my friend as Peggy informed us. Break out the booze and forget the Shirley Temples altough some of us may, of necessity, revert to Shirley Temples at any time now. Do thay make diet Shirley Temples?
By the way, and this is an important distinction, in those days one drank gin and tonic while sitting on the veranda fronting Santa Rosa Sound and watching the tugboats hauling freight up and down the Intracoastal Waterway while one drank Early Times Bourbon Whiskey or some such brown goods libation while sitting on the veranda, excuse me porch (pronounced poch) back in Alabama fronting tree lined strets and other residences while greeting Atticus Finch as he walked by on the way to court (pronounced cote). Gin and tonic was strictly the beach in the summertime and I still associate the smell of gin with Santa Rosa Sound and pine trees.
Maybe things haven´t changed. Dawg drank nothing but single malt scotches in San Francisco and just tequila and dark rum here on the lake.

"and just tequila and dark rum here on the lake."
Finally, finally, something that makes me smile, and the Dawg said it...

Re: The Shalimar Club
My favorite song of hers is "Tango" - it is supposed to dedicated to the silent film star Ramon Navarro, who is a brilliant actor but he just couldn't make it in the 'talkies' with his strong accent.

Look up the lyrics, the song doesn't make a lot of sense, it is more like abstract poetry and images.
Here is a retrospect on Ramon Navarro

Re: The Shalimar Club
Shucks HD - I'm tired of this melancholy crap - how bout a smile? This by the King and Queen of musical comedy - Ethel Merman and Jimmy Durante. I know, before your and mine time, but the message is simple - thank the makers everyday that we have found someone special along for the short, sweet ride. (Sorry, this is only available in audio, in a NPR storage vault).
