linksys wireless route
Am at a friend's house who has the above router, not telmex. Think I
tried all the numbers on the back to try and connect. Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: linksys wireless route
A third-party router will not work with TelMex's router unless it is set up to be a bridge. If you can see a wireless signal being broadcast, identify which one it is (usually by name and strength), and if it IS a bridge, then the numbers on the TelMex modem for WEP/WPA will work. If it is not a bridge, you will only be able to connect to the TelMex router.

Re: linksys wireless route
Please tell us what you ended up doing... in particular because a Linksys by itself will not work, so there is a TelMex modem somewhere.

That's a great reference list, but I believe she would have been looking for the WEP/WAP, not logging into the router itself.sparks wrote:Default user names:

Re: linksys wireless route
Well the WEP/WAP or whatever can be changed can't it? I always changed the WIFI login on mine.
I've also brought down a few modems from up north and they worked just plugging them in

Re: linksys wireless route
I don't understand why the wifi router would not work being plugged into the DSL modem (don't get me started on modem vs router... ) . What is it about TelMex that prevents this from working?HelperGuy wrote:A third-party router will not work with TelMex's router unless it is set up to be a bridge. As for the list, I inferred he was offering it up as a way to change the wap password.

Yes, that's true, the wireless number may have been changed.sparks wrote:Well the WEP/WAP or whatever can be changed can't it? I always changed the WIFI login on mine.

Plugging in a router to a modem: the router usually is set up for PPPoE; TelMex modems are DHCP, so you have to disable DHCP in the TelMex modem and bridge the Linksys, yes? Plugging the router into the modem router's LAN ports may work as a pass-through; may not. I've never questioned it' that's TelMex. It's not like a router is a hub. Beyond that I couldn't tell you in tech terms; I never studied networking.
EDIT: Sorry, mixing up my LAN and WAN ports again...

Re: linksys wireless route
PPPoE and DHCP don't have any thing to do with each other, well not directly. If TelMex's is not PPPoE than I suspect there WAN is PPPoA but I don't know. Either way the LAN will probably be DHCP for both PPPoA and PPPoE configured modems. You can plug any device that is setup to acquire an IP into a DHCP device. This would be plugging in the WAN port of the linksys into a Lan port on the modem. That is unless TelMex has some strange setup.HelperGuy wrote:Yes, that's true, the wireless number may have been changed.sparks wrote:Well the WEP/WAP or whatever can be changed can't it? Re: linksys wireless route
I have a Telcel stick so can't look at my old modem/router config. I assume all modems and routers are the same thing these days ... and the only settings you can change are internal network. How the modem talks to the Telmex network has to be a constant DSL thingy.
You can give static IP's to computers and netcams internally or they can get DHCP but easier with static.
What that has to do with anything I'm not sure ;)

Re: linksys wireless route
Actually DSL modems tend to have at least 3 settings on the WAN (telmex) side. PPPoE (Ethernet), PPPoA (atm), or bridged. I don't know what telmex uses but these are the most common protocols. How this is set depends on your dsl provider (oA vs oE) and or how you want to configure your network (bridged). "Modems" and "routers" are not the same thing. Most dsl modems have a router in them.
Yes you can use static or dynamic (dhcp) on both the WAN and or the LAN (local area network) side of the router. Using dhcp is actually the easiest to setup but can be problematic when trying to communicate with a device. However these days there are services that will allow you to use dhcp.
I too have no idea what it has to do with anything... :)

After a bit of research I can point to this wiki link to give perhaps a better idea of why high latency and NAT would be the stumbling blocks in hooking up a router to a router. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation

Called Rod at Laguna net to help. It was a password that I had given regarding the Linksys. My friend entered the password on her laptop and IT WORKED. She was then able to connect. No TelMex involved. It was a good day :)

Are we talking about plugging one router into another using a lan cable?? Only way I could get my Net talk VOIP module to work was to plug another
router into the Telmex router. A good reason to do it is to control your wifi if you share. I use the second router wifi while I let my friend next door
use the Telmex wifi which I can turn off when I need the bandwidth. Have had three different routers plugged into the Telmex router with no problems.
Am I missing something? I do have pretty good quality DSL. By the way if anybody has figured out how to make a net talk VOIP module work plugged
directly into the Telmex modem let me know. HG and I couldn't figure out why it doesn't work but if you plug it into another router plugged into the
Telmex router using a lan cable all is fine. Why Why Why?

Re: linksys wireless route
I've done other NetTalk modules with TelMex modems and not had the problem that exists at Zed's place. Perhaps the same glitch that prevents it form working is allowing passthrough to the other routers. It is a puzzler.

Were I would not classify it as a stumbling block. I do see your point and do agree that the best/ most secure/ fastest speed, way to set up a DSL network would be to put the DSL modem into bridging then set up a security appliance (ASA) router to whatever your provider uses (PPPoA). This is how I have it setup at work. with this setup you have full control of NAT and you reduce latency by removing the additional hop. Also with an asa you are able to control VPN traffic and a hoard of other security measures that are great for small to very large business. But then again, we are all worried about security right.. If you aren’t, most of the speed items can be done by using any router (linksys) that supports PPPoA on its WAN port and a bridged DSL modem. But then again how many of you know or care about your ping rate??? Any gamers down there...? So for the normal web mailer, just plug the one hole labeled WAN on your linksys into any port not labeled WAN or Phone on you Telmex modem and... bham there ya go. No need to worry about NAT or latency. You can serf all the porn you want and never know any difference.
Disclaimer: please understand that were my points are factual most of my posts are written in good fun so... Oh and if there are any 60yo + gamers down there, I would be curious to know what you are playing.

Re: linksys wireless route
Yes we are talking about router to router over LAN. Sorry I can't be of any help with this, I am not familiar with the hardware you speak of. If I were to trouble shoot it, I would look at NAT and or any port forwarding that might be blocking you. If you can, turn off NAT in the modem and see if it works. If not, leave nat off and port forward what ever port/s the VOIP module uses.Zedinmexico wrote:HelperGuy wrote:After a bit of research I can point to this wiki link to give perhaps a better idea of why high latency and NAT would be the stumbling blocks in hooking up a router to a router. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation
