I am looking for a craft store (similar to Michaels or Hobby Lobby in the US) to purchase construction paper, plain cardboard[b]or posterboard and plastic sheets which can be painted. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and.......Happy New Year & Feliz Año Nuevo!

Barbie:

While I have no idea about full service crafts stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels in Mexico, I have seen stores that carry many of the raw materials in Tonala at prices far more reasonable than in the stores you mention. These stores are scattered all over Tonala and it is an enjoyable experience searching them out. Look through the following album and I would bet you will find numerous raw materials: https://picasaweb.google.com/118146709599975173363/TONALAJALISCOMEXICO?authkey=Gv1sRgCK_02oSK__a42wE#5781717592075160898

You might find some of the stuff you need at Abastos.

Fantasia Miguels is almost equal to Michaels, it is 3 floors and has tons of stuff. It is in Guadalajara on Hidalgo and I think 16th Septiembre.

There is a store on Mariano Otero, just down from the Plaza del Sol that is very much like Michaels. It also has underground parking.

You will probably also find these at your local papeleria.

I was thinking the same thing. If that's all I had on my list, I doubt I'd go to Guadalajara (unless I had some other reason to, or I was buying a huge amount and would save significant money by going into the city). There's also the well-run art supply store in Plaza Montana in Ajijic, as well as probably others.

There is a good papeleria in the Plaza Montana complex on the Carreterra in Ajijic. I have purchased poster board and envelopes there: noticed lots of art supplies are carried.
Another one is around the corner from the main church in Ajijic. Turn right at the corner opposite the plaza.
