Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
There's close to ZERO chance of that. IMSS is the Social Security System of Mexico and includes far more than just medical care.

Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
Whether you're in favor of Obamacare or not, it seems to be a good first step in providing what most first world countries already have; a plan to take care of the citizens no matter what their pre-existing conditions may be. The private insurers have long managed to avoid covering the people who need it the most.
That, and the financial horror or having a beloved child who can't be covered.
At least Mexico has SOMETHING for everybody, even if it wouldn't be the choice of everyone. Fudging on your income and assets to get freebies here just isn't right, that's all. It think we all know what's right, whether it's convenient or not.

I agree Gringal...can we throw INAPAM AND DIF cards into the mix too? Just thought I'd stir the pot a little.

Darn straight. Why not? I went on a few bus tours where people wearing watches worth more than a Mexican workers yearly salary were using them without a twinge.

Gringal:
Right or wrong, we live in an age where some take it as a challenge to scam or manipulate the system and then rationalize how it is OK. Does it make any difference if it is INAPAM/DIF cards, bootleg software/movies/music DVD's, free movies/music/books from Internet sites or a multitude of other opportunities?

Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
I think it does make a difference when what you knowingly do, with intent, may affect other people. Or are people just too self centered these days?
I stopped buying DVD's in any Mexican Tiangus because I was informed that they were cartel operated. Is that true? Don't know but the mere possibility gave me pause because the thought had never even crossed my mind.
We can't stop those that take advantage of loopholes in the system...any system. But we don't have to be like them either. "Everybody's doing it" just doesn't wash any more now than it did when we were kids. We're supposed to be older and smarter and have ethics and values.

Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
ObamaCare - Continuing to give the American Medical Association domain without accountability, ignoring the fact that 80% of medical care cost does not even pay for anything medical in the USA, reducing the amount of care a patient actually gets with "insurance", and the best part, legally forcing people to buy insurance. Wow, that sounds great to me!

Okay, I read the entire article. What's your objection to the "Obamacare" plan? How do you feel about coverage for everyone who has pre-existing conditions and can't find insurance in the private sector? Do you think the spiraling health care costs makes sense in a nation that is way below number one in the world in delivering health care?

Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
The biggest problem with ObamaCare is that it does not address the cause of the problem.
What the USA has is a very expensive medical system based on medical defense instead of medical care.
Obama care does not address any of the above. It offers a deal with the insurance companies - accept those with pre-existing conditions, and all the people who do not want to buy insurance will be forced to do so to pay for the expenditures.
Healthy people who can maintain their health with nutrition, lifestyle, etc. are not happy to have their money taken to pay it to some insurance company to cover the health of someone else.
If Obama wants to give insurance to those in need, who cannot afford it, then use the public health system to do so. Make it a separate, government-controlled system. Make it efficient (despite being government… make it exempt from litigation). Maybe he could actually learn something from Mexico. Stealing from others to do it is my recommendation.
- The "specialists" do not want to reduce their fees. Why would they? They entered the specialty with the promise of big money.
The cost of becoming a doctor is not being addressed.
The fact that insurance companies can continue to charge what they want is not being addressed.
The caps on malpractice insurance are great for the insurance companies - there is no obligation for them to lower their fees to match what they do not have to pay in claims.
In NY and FL (the two worst states for family practice) malpractice for Family Practice is about $40,000. Who pays? The patients.
Over 60% of everything you pay a doctor goes to insurance companies - malpractice, liability insurance on the instruments and medical machines, liability insurance on medicine, etc.

Re: Seguro Popular vs IMSS
Government control of insurance is politics, whether it is in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Peru, or Russia. Seguro Popular was the pet project of the PAN. IMSS was a project of the PRI. Both Mexican political parties with political agendas in the making of each government insurance. If you want to know more about Seguro Popular or IMSS, you are free to ask. If you favor ObamaCare over Seguro Popular, feel free to tell us. If ObamaCare can offer what IMSS offers, why does it need to cost 10 to 50 times as much?

"why does it need to cost 10 to 50 times as much?"
1) Doctors
2) Insurance Companies
3) Lawyers
Who isn't sick of each pointing fingers at the other?
