NYC is really taking a beating.

They were saying that this would give Obama a chance to be a hero. Superman couldn't be a hero with what is happening. NYC is going to be down for days and it will take a year to clear all the damage.

When Katrina hit, GWB got the blame. I have a feeling that this is going to be worse. The tunnels are flooded, the subways are flooding and all the electrical is below ground. This could be a $100 BILLION dollar problem.

Can't the storm at least pass over before you all go political...and then take it to the octagon. There are some people that are more interested in the storm damage than who Obama is going to blaming for whatever.

When things go bump in the night, it presents so many opportunities for inaccurate and false reports. Now that daylight has hit, more accurate reports are coming in and numbers continue to be revised. For example during the night they had been reporting 3.5M without power but that number has been revised into the 7M - 7.5M range.

Yes, I've seen many different reports as of this morning. Did see NYSE plans to be out for only 2 days which means they should be operational again tomorrow.

I would think that the NYSE being open tomorrow would probably depend on power. A few minutes ago on the morning news, they were talking 10 days to two weeks to get power restored in many areas. I do know that our New Mexico power company has sent repair crews back East to assist.

NYSE must have generators, no?

The NYU Medical Center had backup generators which failed during the night and they had to evacuate approx. 200 critically ill patients:

It would be my guess that the financial district and core areas of NYC probably will be given priority status?

We ran around from fire to fire all night. Now waiting to here what's next. A few guys I work with lost their home, but we are all safe. Will call when I can. There are conflicting reports on the total number of homes burnt in Breezy Point, Queens - anywhere from 50 to 100. Some pretty dynamic video in the following report:

Katrina was bad. Very bad. The story that sticks in my head was of all those people confined to a sports stadium with no police protection and little else.
One can hope that something was learned from that experience.
Civil chaos develops quickly after a disaster hits. The cockroaches of the human race come out.

Karina is a great case study in how not to prepare and how not to deal with a hurricane and any future President who hasn't learned from it would have to be deemed totally incompetent! From the current news reports, it doesn't appear that there has been much in the way of looting. A few minor reports out of Philadelphia is about all I have seen so far. I am guessing that the reports of mobilizations of National Guard in various States and the fact that police departments were beefed up may have knocked some sense into these otherwise foolish people?

I was talking to the lady who manages the closest gas station to our house this morning. She was a New Orleans native and had 14 members of her family living in New Orleans when Katrina hit. 5 of her family members died and she and her husband were lucky enough to be moved to Albuquerque by the government since there was a lack of housing. While she does miss certain aspects of New Orleans, she really appreciates our more stable weather!
