The light blue areas on the above map indicate the area that Lake Chapala may have covered about 40,000 years ago?

Re: How Big Was Lake Chapala?
and before that.......
The landscape of the Cienaga de Chapala has undergone changes ranging from wetlands to agricultural land. Originally, the marsh and Lake Chapala were part of a huge saltwater lake, formed by an earthquake, extended to what is now Patzcuaro Cuitzeo, La Piedad, Aguascalientes, Tuxpan and Guadalajara. The huge basin part, he became the recipient of large amounts of fresh water mixed with salt water and that, when exceeded the limits of containment, were getting to the Pacific Ocean via the James River. Some aquatic species were adapting to change and that's how the family was formed called whitefish. The action on the environment exerted by the Indians settled in the swamp, was limited to the construction of roads inside, using the system "tamandas" which is similar to the chinamperĂa developed elsewhere for agriculture and construction of some burial mounds. Agriculture was a complementary and their livelihood was based on fishing, hunting and gathering.http://www.eumed.net/rev/tecsistecatl/n4/vns.htm
