Just want to share what struck me as a real chuckle about that mural showing the Indigenous people and the Conquistadores: Anybody else notice the discrepancy in size between the two?
lol!

The left side seems to represent the pre-Hispanic age, and the right side represents the arrival of the conquistadors. Two different scenes on one mural (see the divide at the top between a palapa and the ocean scene?)

I think the two sides appear to be depicted in different scales, rather than trying to represent the natives as heroic figures, but that could just be my darn bifocals too.

I'd be interested in knowing more about the mural, a full sized photo of the whole thing and where it is found.

The Indigenous chief is of he same scale as he Spaniards on that scene and all Indigenous are larger in the Prehispanic side of he mural-
I look at it as a way to separate these two scenes in time and place but the artist could tell us exactly what he meant.

Either way it's a pretty tame mural when you compare it to the depictions of Spaniards in other more well known Mexican murals.

Artists do not "tell you what they meant".

You look, you see, and you form your own opinion.

I'm the father of an artist, and have been told this many times.

Actually not always true. We had the privilege of having Efren Gonzalez explain in full detail every segment of his mural in the stairwell of the Chapala City Hall:

You do whatever you want. I have a mural from he artist on one of my wall and I feel perfecly free to talk to him. He will say whatever, I will believe whatever, I just would like to hear what he has to say.

I was raised going to museums every Thursday afternoon and I do no need to tell me what to ask or no ask.

Last time I asked an artist about her art we had the best time. She told me what she saw and I told her what I saw and we had a great time about it.

Wouldn't want to discourage tourism from Spain, would you? Come to think of it, I have never met a Spanish tourist in Mexico. Hmmm...maybe they've seen pics of some of those other more well known Mexican murals.

They are lots of Spanish tourists in Chiapas , you see full buses of them . there are quite a few Spanish expats living there as well.

Hahaha

Gotta say, I find this photo irritating. The painting on the right is crisp and clean and the one on the left is muddy and muted. I couldn't figure out why they were side by side, now I see.
