Drive to Morelia via Ocotlan
On Saturday, August 11 we headed out from Chapala to Morelia via Ocotlan. Through the years, I have read plenty of negative comments about driving out through Ocotlan but have now driven this particular route four times since August of 2011 and found nothing particularly challenging. We generally figure on three and a half hours to four hours to "centro Morelia" and this drive fit the norm.

The road between the Chapala-Guadalajara highway and Ocotlan has been improved massively in the last five years.

Don't know if you have ever made this drive before, but it is really a piece of cake. After leaving Chapala, you only make two turns between Chapala and where you get on the cuota (15D) on the outskirts of Ocotlan: 1) take the Ocotlan/La Barca turnoff the Chapala -Guadalajara Hwy & 2) as you approach "centro" Ocotlan, you will exit to the right at the large green sign indicating Mexico, etc. Since we departed from a location directly below Mirasol, our mileage (181.7 miles) to the Cathedral will be close for you. Our actual driving time was 3 hours 31 minutes. There are a few slow stretches but we made up for the slower stretches by driving 80 to 85mph on the cuota. The great news is that there are only 115 topes between Chapala and the Ocotlan cuota entrance and a total of 228 for the entire trip to centro Morelia!
Morelia is notorious for horrendous traffic at certain times and I would recommend that your projected arrival time be a consideration. Rush hours and Saturday Market Day are probably the worst and things are exacerbated by the constant construction and detours. Apparently we lucked out by arriving at around 1pm on a Saturday and didn't hit particularly nasty traffic. Our drive from a Pemex station on the highway into centro:
