Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
This article is probably for many of the people who have retired here and who have high blood pressure. This is a well run study, and peer reviewed, although those that know me know that doesn't mean much to me, that specifically mentions HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) and the prevalence of that in our foods and the dangers it can cause. Read it and learn about what might be contributing to your high blood pressure.
Sorry Cheenagringo that I placed this is Out of the Mirador, but I couldn't get the Dental/Medical Postings to work...
As if you needed any other reason to reduce sugar intake, a study found that the over-consumption of foods with fructose is linked to high blood pressure. Not surprisingly, giant groups who want you to eat more HFCS (the worst kind of sugar) have spoken out against this and other similar studies.
Foods with Fructose and the Link to High Blood Pressure
The study, found in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, says that people who consume more foods with fructose have a greater chance of developing high blood pressure.
Fructose is a natural sugar found in fruit and vegetables, as well as many processed foods containing high-fructose corn syrup. What’s unnatural about it all is the sheer volume of fructose we find in foods in the form of HFCS and just how much of this sweet syrup Americans are taking in.
In the 1950s and 1960s, sucrose was the main source of sugar for Americans. Sucrose is the sweet substance in table sugar made from sugarcane or beets. But with the development of cheap HFCS, that changed dramatically.
Research shows that Americans consume 35 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup each year, although according to Princeton University, the average American consumes 60 pounds of HFCS every single year.
This most recent study found that those participants who took in 74 grams of fructose (the equivalent of about 2.5 sweet drinks), were at a 28% greater risk of blood pressure levels 135/85 or higher and a 77% greater risk of extreme high blood pressure, with levels greater than 160/100.

Soon after the findings were published, the Corn Refiners Association spoke out saying that the researchers overestimated the amount of fructose in the drinks being studied. The researchers denied this.
The American Beverage Association also weighed in, saying the findings, “furthers the confusion and misunderstandings about high fructose corn syrup and sugar-sweetened beverages,” adding that no cause and effect relationship could be established through this particular research methodology.
The researchers agree, to a certain extent, and admit that further research is needed in order to say for certain that foods with fructose caused the high blood pressure and weren’t simply a contributor or linked.
With the addition of HFCS to the American food market, obesity has skyrocketed. And there is little doubt that the fructose in this cheap sugary syrup plays a large role in the growing waistline and declining health of society.

My Mom is one of those folks who has the gastric upset from all this HFCS. She
stopped eating it and her gut quieted right down. My Mother is also one of those
folks who tastes Aspertame (Nutrasweet) as a very bitter substance which she
has to spit out now. You can put bowls of yogurt out sweetened with splenda
and nutrasweet and normal sugar. She can pick each out in blind tests. I wonder
if these two things are related. Any ideas? Oh yea she also had to give up
gluten.

What I see also is people who think what they eat is healthy mostly older people. example: the jello fruit cups and single portion fruits sounds good right? I have tried to point out to some of my friend, by articles and showing them the info on the food in their house, the sugar and or sodium content. I won't even get into artificially sweetened everything they consume.
They are in the revolving, never ending line at at least 5 different kinds of doctors offices. High blood pressure, diabetes, over weight, back problems and on and on and on. Sometimes I think the Dr's office is the only social club they have...... It is very sad. Even their dogs and cats are over weight... I know some people who think my doctor can give me a pill for that and somehow they believe that is a free pass. Even their animals are on some kind of medicine when bot the owner and pet just need some exercise. Some cannot go anywhere w/0 the electric scooter. The sadder thing is I am seeing people younger and younger falling victim to being down right lazy, whether it is too lazy to cook which leads to bad nutrtion choices. Well that got me going!!!!!

Dr Mike does Mexico have the same prevalence of HFCS in their foods as NoB? I try to avoid all sugar but haven't tried reading the labels of the foods I suspect might contain it.

At least in 2009 Coke in Mexico did not have HFCS - and they were buying Mexican Coke in the US (not the white kind). http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/june-2009/food/coke-vs-coke/overview/coke-vs-coke-ov.htm

I know some people who are morbidly obese (both of them at least 100 lbs. overweight) who slug down diet drinks by the case. What's your opinion of "diet" sodas, Dr. Mike? I heard somewhere that they're bad for you.

Re: Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
fructose is sugar frome fruit... is this strictly refined fruit sugars or does it include nutural unrefined fruit sugars.??
in other words... do the results of this study suggest oranges and pineapple cause high blood pressure?

Re: Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
I do not drink any diet sodas. What was in that Pepsi was good ole sugar. I've always told my patients that if they are going to drink soda, drink regular drinks (with sugar) and not drink artificial sweeteners. Aspartame breaks down into three different poisons in your body, each equally dangerous. It is a well known neuro-poison. I choose to avoid it at all costs.
I am drinking a regular Pepsi in the photograph because I had a choice of alcohol or Pepsi. I chose not to drink alcohol.

Re: Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
Hock,
The article stayed mainly HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) which is highly refined from corn. Eating some fructose from fruits will not harm you and the vitamins and minerals and fiber from the fruit is good for you.

Hock,
The article was mainly concerned about HFSC (HIGHLY refined corn syrup). Eating some fructose will not harm you and the benefit of eating the fruit, with its vitamins, minerals and fiber, far outweigh the negative effects of fructose. So eat your fruit with joy.

Re: Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
Grizzy,
If you look on the can or bottle to the ingredients of Mexican coke, you'll see it has sugar rather than HFCS. That is the way coke (USA) used to make theirs until they switched to the cheaper HFCS. This is why Mexican coke tastes better than the coke in the USA.
Now I am not encouraging everyone to run out and drink soft drink, but if you choose to do so, drink the one with the natural ingredient of sugar not man made sweeteners.

Beware the HFCS folks want to be able to use the word sugar instead of HFCS which many people don't want.

Not to politicize this, but as I recall, the scenario went something like: The U.S. put an embargo on Cuban sugar, followed by the emergence of HFCS corn producers, which, since it was cheaper, became the ingredient of choice in soft drinks. Mexico, on the other hand, has lots of sugar cane.
Does anyone think that the corn lobby would like to see the embargo lifted and sugar return? Hmmm?

Actually it kinda goes like this, simple version. NAFTA limited the amount of sugar Mexico could sell in the US. The US heavily subsidizes its sugar producers and even with their corporate welfare they couldn't compete so Uncle Sam stepped in to give them an unfair advantage. But....the US was allowed to export large amounts of HFCS to Mexico which further damaged the Mexican sugar industry. So Mexico with Fox at the helm (ex Coca Cola exec with strong ties to the Mexican sugar industry) slapped a tax on all soft drinks using HFCS. The pampered US sugar dudes cried to their Uncle Sam that this was a violation of the NAFTA agreement and the US took the case to court and won.
So if you read the label on soft drinks bottled here you will see the word azucares which can mean one of several types of sweeteners and not solely cane sugar. There is no law in Mexico that I have seen that prohibits the use of HFCS in soft drinks. Mexican soft drinks have the reputation of using only cane sugar. True or urban legend? My personal opinion is that they do indeed use HFCS to a certain degree but this I cannot state as fact.
But it is indeed a political matter and not a health concern.

Re: Foods with Fructose Linked to High Blood Pressure
I have not seen mention of the fact that most corn in the U.S. is genetically modified, therefore in my books qualifies as a frankenfood. That's where the cheap HFCS comes from. Now allegedly there is a problem in the U.S. in some areas regarding corn, thank you monsatan.
Personally I do not drink ANY soft drinks. I do use real sugar, mascabado which actually has some nutritive value by virtue of the molasses still contained in it.

Where can we import Japanese soft drinks...I believe they use only Stevia to sweeten.

We consume very little soft drinks in our home. Agua fresca is the norm and our tastes run to little added sugar. A much healthier choice and easier on the budget.

BINGO, best choice ever IMO, and I love the stuff. Got any recipes, for the agua fresca impaired? I have it at Mexican friends homes, but have never tried it myself. We do make Jamaica, and love it, but we do tend to use quite a bit of sugar. Mind you we're not dessert eaters, and neither of us has diabetes.

When dining out I always order the Iced Tea... I like plain ole Cold Tea with no sugar and no chemical Lemon Taste....
Of course, establishments probably use the local Tap Water to make....
Probably why I always seem ta be runn'n to the John

All I know is my wife uses different fruits or leftover juices and makes all different types. When she makes the jamaica she makes it very concentrated and each person can dilute and sweeten it to their gusto. The horchata is made from scratch by soaking the rice with the cinnamon stick. My personal favorite is maracuya.

Agua frescas really are the best solution. I also like iced tea...natural...properly made hot tea poured over ice cubes. The best iced tea I've had at a restaurant is served at Panino's...big glass with one envelope of Splenda and a slice of lime.
