You can buy seasalt in a bottle with a "built in" grinder at Walmart.

I’m not sure if you’re talking about grinding larger crystals or chunks. I use a coffee grinder (which I only use for spices) for larger crystals.

Spend the money and get the coffee grinder, you won’t regret it. One of the things I love to do during the dry season is to take unsalted nuts, moisten with a very fine salt & water solution, mist them from a sprayer bottle and let them dry in the sun. Salted perfectly to your taste, so good. After you work with it for a while you get the hang of it and the difference is incredible on almost everything.

Just wanted to say I like your board name. Kind of Zappa-esque.

Before putting your colima salt in a mill dry it on a cookie sheet in a low oven. I've found most of the salt has a high moisture content and that's not a good thing for the mill.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
Salt absorbs moisture. If you notice the salt shakers in restaurants lakeside, most of them have rice added which will absorb some of the moisture. So if you get a good salt grinder you may want to wait until the dry season to load it with salt. Salt is very corrosive to metal - found out the hard way by using a metal salt shaker in my kitchen. Maybe grind a batch, put it in a shaker with rice to keep it dry and then empty the shaker/grinder. The coffee grinder would be ideal as you can do a batch then empty it and dry it after grinding the salt.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
Totally agree...I make my own chili powder, ground cumin, almost every kind of ground spice or blend....tightly sealed in the fridge they keep for a long time...no need to buy the expensive jars of spice at WalMart that may have been sitting in a warehouse for who knows how long.Parker wrote:Jim W wrote:Thank You ALL.....a friend gave us a liter bag of sea salt from Colima area....Looks like a lifetime supply....LOL

If you can find it, ceramic blades won't corrode in a salt grinder like metal blades will.

With a coffee grinder no need to worry about the blade because after grinding everything gets put into another container. Also I only paid, in the USA about $15 dollars and have had them about 15 years. The truly neat thing is all the “cool” things you can create with it, at least for me anyway.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
I lay the salt in a single layer on parchment paper (foil works, too) so that after it dries I can use the paper/foil to funnel it into the grinder or a container with a good seal.
Use low heat, 250˚-300˚, for 15-30 minutes depending on how damp your salt is.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
I've tried drying the Colima sea salt using the oven method, and it doesn't work for me. It doesn't get crystalline enough to be cracked by the grinders, no matter how long I cook it. I also tried buying the rock salt in platic containers at WalMart (Pegasus or something); same thing. Perhaps the problem lies in the grinder itself, but it always worked fine with rock salt I purchased NOB.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
Sodium chloride -- aka salt -- is a crystalline compound that comes from the oceans. Salt can be harvested from seawater through evaporation, or it can be mined from inland deposits left by ancient oceans. Most salt we use in our kitchens and dining rooms is mined, except salt sold as "sea salt," which comes from seawater.
We're you using sea salt NoB or kosher salt? The mined salts seem to have a much lower moisture content in my experience.
You might try drying for a longer time.

Re: Looking for Salt Mill/Grinder
I don't recall what kind of salt back home... too many years ago. It was probably sold as salt for grinders; so many choices in the stores, and I used many different brands over the years depending on availability and price. Here, I've tried drying for 20, 30, 1 hr... it still brings the grinders to a halt. So now I use it in its unadulterated form when baking potatos on the BBQ, or making guacamole, roasting chicken, that kind of thing.

Thank You for the advice......30 minutes @ 250 on foil....works great

PS I also love sea salt but I use a small covered dish - about 3 inches in diameter and take a pinch when I need it.
