Story about the Ajijic pier

When you look at the picture of the Ajijic pier, you know the picture above, you will notice a whiter area on toward the top of the pier. That's because in the 1970s the lake level was so high that it not only covered the then lower pier, but also covered the floor of the old Pasada. In fact the water level in the Pasada , you know, the bar and eating area, was higher than one foot. The white area is the about 2 foot addition they added to the pier because the water got so high in the 70s.

Some of you know the owner of the first Internet Service Provider lakeside, the owner of www.laguna.com.mx, Rod Collins. He remembers as a child walking ankle deep on water when walking down the pier before they raised it.

I remember the first time I went into the Old Posada and saw the markings on one of the pillars inside the restaurant, indicating water level caused by the lake overflowing. Had to be four feet from the floor. from 1970, I believe.

In the old days before streetlights Banditos use to rule at night so Old Posada
use to have a big dog that would walk home with you and than come back to
the Posada and take the next person home.

No. Morley Eager was. Helped him sand bag the back door so the water wouldn't come in.
Lake level was up to the corner of Morelos and 16th de sep. (where René's jewelry shop is)

I was 19 when the lake rose so high, boats could actually cross over the pier, ALL of the houses that are along the shore were flooded, at the old Posada, they moved the restaurant to the pool area. another topic, many people have died diving off the pier at the end, there used to big huge chunks of concrete that broke off the pier, we only dove off the sides never from the end. I'm coming down next week, and I am sad to see the lake so low, but if stand at mthe edge of the water and look across....it doesn't seem so low.

First 500 years of Ajijic is the name of the book I got the story from. You can find it around Ajijic.


The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution)publish a book with a bunch of stories like this up through the 80s.
Some parts of the books doesn't agree with other parts of the book as it was weakly editied as I am sure peoples
feeling were involved in all the folks writing the book and the editor was a weak one.

Another story I liked was it seems some of the local historical markers in Chapala were made up. So one story in the book
was about how the stories were fake and later on another person told the story that the historical markers were true. Talk
about weak editing. LOL

I can't remember the time frame of my Posada Dog story so I don't know if it dates back to Pancho Villa.

You know, one has to read a lot of less desirable stuff to find a thread like this gem, which then makes it all worth it. Thank You to all those that contributed.

Lived in Ajijic in the mid seventies... in the mirador above Silvia's house. The old Posada was where we would go on Saturday nights for music and dancing. and my little dog, Toots would come with... I would have a split of wine and a glass of ice and the waiter would always bring a dish of water for Toots.
One Saturday it was especially busy and the waiter forgot to bring Toots her water.
I didn't realize this... not 'till we were walking home and Toots was weaving up the sidewalk like a borrachera.
Toots had been thirsty and during the evening had been helping herself to my iced wine... Toots was tipsy.
Never had a hangover, but she slept especially well that night. Lizzy
