Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
So sorry to return to the subject of this thread because this rabbit trail is so funny. BUT.... anyone who gets their Yahoo email hacked I'll bet you $1 that you used a simple password with all letters, no numbers.
There are basically call center-type shops in Nigeria, Russia, and Ukraine-type countries where the employees' jobs are to do nothing but try to figure out your too-easy passwords so they can spam from your account. Long story short... use a freakin' pass-PHRASE... a saying that you are likely to remember but a foreign sweatshop employee wouldn't. Like "IamCravenMoreheadButtUnlikelyToGetAny"
Nuttin' like tying together the topic and the digression, hee hee.

Merry:
While Yahoo certainly isn't admitting to any fault in this matter, there has been some tracing or tracking to Yahoo Message Boards or Groups and people logging on to them with their user names and passwords. To give a very current example, out of the very recently created Yahoo Group for Lake Chapala or whatever they call it, there has been an account grab and spam going out to members. There have also been reports that Yahoo servers have been compromised and information is being pulled from there.
As I have stated before, Yahoo is a joke and is destined for the trash heap unless someone purchases them at a fire sale price and does a massive turnaround!

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
Neil, a lot of technically unsavvy people use Yahoo and fall for a lot of phishing scams of all types. Yahoo does let hackers bang on the forgot password routine too many times before locking the account. Preaching about passphrases is about all you can do for these people.
The Yahoo Group for Lake Chapala was set up quickly without much forethought; I am a moderator on many Yahoo groups and imho the new Chapala group was not set up with enough safeguards. It's a field day for those who get paid for harvesting names from the lists.

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
Announced within the past couple of hours - a sizable hack of as many as 450,000 Yahoo accounts!
"SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A previously unknown hacker group has posted online the details of 450,000 user accounts and passwords it claims to have taken from a Yahoo server.
The Ars Technica technology news website reported that the group, which calls itself D33DS Company, hacked into an unidentified subdomain of Yahoo's website where they retrieved unencrypted account details.
A Yahoo spokesperson in Singapore declined to comment.
The affected accounts appeared to belong to a voice-over-Internet-protocol, or VOIP, service called Yahoo Voices, which runs on Yahoo's instant messenger. The Voices service is powered by Jajah, a VOIP platform that was bought by Telefonica Europe BV in 2010........

Seems to me that Sparks said he was using Yahoo VOIP?

Yep ... but not for a long time. That does not mean they don't have my number (so to speak). I don't use IM at all with a cel connection
It also appears Yahoo Voices is not VOIP but just another community that somehow uses IM. Never heard of it before

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
The fact that this group apparently retrieved "unencrypted account details" is one more reason to be wary of using any of Yahoo's services. Along with Hotmail, Yahoo has been the target of password theft for years now, and for years have refused to acknowledge the fact, or to offer any help to its millions of subscribers.
That they would actually store ANY of this information in an unprotected manner...? They deserve to be taken to court by 450,000 people in a class action and sued for every penny they have.

"Absolut Narcissist" - Cheena? Not so subtle but I get your drift. Were it not for his efforts I would not be replying. There would be no "web board". I will reserve judgement until I've had a one on one encounter. At the end of the day "narcissists" do damage in all their relationships. I see no evidence of this. So, I'm laying off, for now.

He is absolutely correct. Personally I have given up on Yahoo and Hotmail and if you have to use free email use Gmail and read the contract carefully. As far as
suing goes to Yahoo what are you going to collect LOL? They don't have enough money to have a good lawyers anymore.

Actually, I would hope that a suit would shatter them financially to the point where their only option would be to sell off whatever good technology they might have.

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
I should make it clear, for anyone reading these comments: I don't have a hate-on for Yahoo in particular. What galls me is that they have a public trust, to protect their users, and they don't seem capable of doing that... or admitting the fact. With all this information floating around the web, we need to be confident that our stuff is safe.
And where in this current story is Yahoo's response? I can't find one. That's even more despicable.

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
The mere fact that Yahoo has had five CEO's in five years speaks to just how screwed up they are! With the appointment of Marissa Mayer, there are many questions about this latest move:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/story/2012-07-17/yahoo-earnings-marissa-mayer/56285424/1
I continue to be amazed by the shear number of expats who for one reason or another got hooked up with Yahoo and continue to maintain that relationship today. I am speculating that many started with Yahoo because of the Yahoo Groups since they provided a source for information on select areas?
After being burned by their Flickr photo sharing service, I will never have another thing to do with any company or service related to Yahoo!

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
I know in the early days, everyone signed up with either HotMail or Yahoo, because they offered free email service. Eventualy, hotmail became the domain of kids and spammers, and I began recommending against it simply because of the name. GMail took over in a big way for a number of reasons.

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
Have had an account since '97-'98 because it seemed the best at the time and had to have an option to company email. Use Gmail much more now
Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
I belong to several Yahoo Groups and one of them must have been hacked. Because many members Yahoo email accounts were hijacked (you need a Yahoo email account to belong to a Yahoo Group and it need to be open to participate). The chat group owner is now moderating all messages to screen out the hacker emails that say "click on this link". Who knows where it takes you! So far I recognize them and mark them as spam.

Re: Widespread Hacking of Yahoo Email Accounts?
I don't know how it is today but a year and a half ago, I played hell trying to get a phone number for Yahoo and their misnamed customer service department. Once I finally did get to a person, they refused to address my problem verbally and indicted it could only be done through customer help email.
Apparently, it is somewhat the same today:
"YAHOO IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH
EITHER BY PHONR OR EMAIL NOW!
THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TOTAL
CRAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!
Anonymous 7/19/12 3:09AM"
Quite a litany of comments/complaint at: http://www.contacthelp.com/comment_list.php?listing=148
I was only able to get a resemblance of action out of them after I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of San Jose, CA!

The thing is, once a list of "confirmed" email addresses gets out, the spammers have a field day.
