Sure hope the local traffic cops haven't read this. Why give them another excuse to grind the driving public. Some info is best left unexpressed. Get my drift. Oh, and bye the bye, get a tune up, a "sticker", and set an example. You could/would be the first on your block.

Jalisco plates only. Foreign plates problem only if vehicle is visibly smoking.
I doubt if local cops have equipment to test exhaust. Anybody remember
California around 1960 and the smog problem?? Well Guad has the same
problem. They need to get the cars cleaned up to clean up the air. Just
do it and get it done. Go get your sticker. Price you pay for Jalisco plated
car. Yes the cars pollute more than the cement factory believe it or not.

You need to have a smog check sticker on your car window - new one each year. And not having the sticker is what gets you the ticket. So the local cops can check. Although I remember hearing in the past that it was traffic police in Guadalajara who were doing the checking - especially going into Guadalajara.

Time to change the law if what Zed says is true. Emissions stickers whould be required of all vehicles no matter in which jurisdiction they are registered. Dawg would also recommend that all owners of foreign plated vehicles be required to pay annual fees for stickers permitting their operation on Mexican roads. All those driving vehicles bearing South Dakota plates would, of course, pay triple fees just based on principle alone.

We do get a pass on alot of things in Mexico Dawg. Probably the car issues
are the biggest pass we get. Not sure I want to have gringo plates anymore
inspite of the savings.

We have driven a Mexican plated car bought in Guadalajara since 2004 and got rid of our two California plated cars about that time. We drive very long distances between Lake Chapala and the southern states and until recently, before the opening of the Arco Norte, we had to drive through the heart of Mexico City with its thuggish cops. This is a fact. Before we got a Mexican plated car and drove about in California plated cars, we were the subjects of periodic harassment. Since we got rid of those foreign plated vehicles eght years ago and switched to Jalisco plated vehicles , we have NEVER been harassed by local or federal cops in the states we constantly drive in from Jaliisco to Michoacan to Chiapas to Puebla to Veracruz to Oaxaca to Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Don´t kid yourself. Stopping foreign plated cars is, among Mexican cops of all stripes - federal, state or local - like shooting fish in a barrel. They call it the "Gringo Tax". Get with it if you want to stay here or get the hell out.
