susan do try to keep up with the plot here. It has already been reported to Lakeside Crime, as well as the M.P.

Yes they were armed after a fashion, in fact they left a fair sized knife out on the terrace in their haste to escape from the dog.

I do know that, thanks, and she is now resting on her laurels, being praised by everyone within earshot, and getting extra treats for bravery in the face of danger.

She knows she did a great job, and has pretty much given up chasing birds since bad people are way more fun and rewarding from her point of view. Not bad for a 12 year old, who should have been sound asleep.

I can't help but ask: Would your dog pick up meats thrown over the wall? This was happening in Riberas del Pilar when I lived there: poisoned meat was taking the dog out of the equation.

I never had to face that problem, since I trained my dogs early on never to pick up scraps from the street, and I put them to the test many times. I didn't get a chance to test them, though, with meat thrown over the fence. So, it's a good idea to check the perimeter of your property before letting your dog out of the house.

That's a great question Lehrer, and in fact I was going to ask how you trained your dogs to avoid tempting things in their way. Our dog is never let out unsupervised, however it is possible that she could be tricked into eating a piece of meat on her own turf. We watch at the front of the house, but the back is on several different levels which really can't be monitored easily.

She is reluctant to take anything from people she doesn't know or like. That includes veterinarians who are trying to buy her affections. A piece of meat hmmm, no way to tell what she'd do. Certain people that she knows could probably give her anything.

The good thing is that she is old and rarely goes all the way down to the back of the property anymore. We'll really have to be more vigilant now. There have been, in the past, a number of dog poisonings in our area.

@ raqueteer -

It is, I guess, a question of rapport with the dogs. When they were young, if they approached a chicken leg (or whatever) that was lying in the park, on the street, or whatever -- I just said: "No!" in a firm and authoritative voice.

My good boy Happy (who has since crossed over the Rainbow Bridge) once picked up a chicken leg in the city park and I yelled: "No! Drop it!" and he actually spit that thing about two feet away! Folks who saw that were absolutely amazed.

After we came to Mexico, we maintained the discipline. Just a week ago or so, my best girl (Shiva) approached a BBQ rib on the street, and I deliberately let her do her thing. She sniffed of it while I watched. Then she straddled it and peed on it!!!!
lol!

She's fifteen years old now and hasn't forgotten what she's been taught. What a sweetheart!

Amazing. Our girl was trained from puppyhood not to take things as well, however she is very clever, and after being reprimanded for excessive barking now waits until we've closed the door before starting up. Apparently in doggy think if you can't see the behavior, it never happened. They seem to have a Las Vegas attitude.

Dogs are great!
