New Development
We are/had been looking at Colima state especially the coast as an area to live but heard on a blog (Sparks?) that there is a new goal toward developing the area into a "Cancun type destination". Is this true? If so, does anyone know details and exactly what area of the coast is involved? That isn't what we are looking for! Thanks

Re: New Development
Well I guess the big coast areas of Colima would be Manzinillo, Barre de Navidad and Melaque. No?
Re: New Development
That's correct. There was an article in the Guadalajara Reporter a week or two ago about it. The first phase will be the building of infrastructure, e.g. new highway, bridges, power, etc.. Google FONATUR and you might find the article or a press release.

Re: New Development
A friend said that in a local newspaper there are a few articles about the development being put on hold due to economic conditions.
Colima wants to bypass Jalisco by building a road out by the airport, along the beach and up to Playa de Cocos and Isla de Navidad. Long time border dispute. Most of the development would be north of the airport but the plans also include Playa de Oro down to Santiago Bay.
If you want quiet there's Cuyutlan .... or Barra/Melaque/La Manzanilla in Jalisco

Re: New Development
Cuyutlan is my new favorite....laid back, not as touristy (read not some many Gringos) as Barra, etc. Some nice restaurants, a few decent hotels. Unlike most of the other popular Costalegre spots, it is not protected by a bay, so the whole area is wide open to the Pacific...the waves are breathtaking! It seems to be cooler because of the unobstructed on-shore breeze. It's certainly not a swimming area for children...undertows are severe. But for peace and quiet (except for the ocean's roar) it's great.
As far as year-round living, I'm not gonna put up with that humidity anywhere on the coast, especially since Cuyutlan is only about 3 hours from Jocotepec, where the weather is liveable year round.
Check out Spark's link in the above post for some great info.

No...Manzanillo is in Colima, the others two are in Jalisco.

Re: New Development
As Sparks said La Manzanilla in Jalisco, just a few miles up the coast from Melaque, is also a quiet place...and the ocean is much more kid-friendly!

Re: New Development
GBA TRUCKS, right on - I love Cuyutlan, quiet and peaceful and much less touristy. 2 1/2 hours tops from Ajijic. I also have found the Cabo Corrientes cause storms to be nowhere near as likely to strike as in Barra and Vallarta. It's also a hop skip and a jump to Colima, Comala and Manzanillo. But shhhh - lets keep it on the QT.
