I believe it was only as far out as the Mayans could predict at the time. Up to the solstice of 2012. Nothing more, nothing less........

Of course the celestial alignment also takes place which is driving some of the "end of the world" theories. Apparently the gravitational pull is going to cause a massive continental shift. Hopefully Mexico doesn't end up where Canada currently is or we'll have to move south all over again....jaja.

A University professor told me the calender ends for the same reason our
calenders end at the end of the year. We don't think the world is going to
end because the modern calender ends at dec. He said the mayan calander
just ends because they chose to end it there. Some other evidence regarding
this but nobody agrees about it in the scholarly world. In Belize everybody
was reading about this when we stayed there a few years ago. Many many
people believed it on Caye Caulker an Island off the coast of Belize. I found
it all a little bit sad. The science/history is very weak for the end of the world
next year. Hope I am not surprised :-) :-)

The Maya calender spans over 5000 some years after the era ends they believe the word as we know it changes...no kidding lots of changes in 5000 years! The Mayas do not believe in a worl ending but in a world changing..
I love their representation of the God of time, an old man carrying a heavy burden..
We will be in Maya country for that end of the calender and are plannning to celebrate it along with everyone around, just like people did in 2000, just another excuse for a party.
There are a lot of events planned in Chiapas and rooms are already booking up. It should be good for tourism in Southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
The Mayas count in units of 20 and it is hell learning numbers if you are not good at math, cannot imagine saying that last year in Maya....

You're right about the calendar ending and not the world itself. But its fun wondering...what if.

I hope you are correct Brigitte that the world will not end but will change instead. We need major changes in the world for survival I think. You guys will be at ground zero when the calendar changes over.

...just as long as the change isn't the reversing of the poles. Hmmmm. Now THAT would be climate change we could all agree about. Those left, that is.
