Can You Identify This Big Spider
Found this large spider on its web in my workshop this morning. Leg span about 4 inches, legs thin and not noticeably hairy. Thick, capsule-shaped body about 3/4 inch long with an intricate pattern in light green, tan-yellow, brown. Not aggressive, but it's a big MF. Any idea what kind it is?

Sounds like a banana spider. Can you post a photo of it?

I don't mean to brag. We had one that I never measured but was easily 18" Spread. Not aggressive at all, beautiful colouring. Our gardener advised not to go near it, so when in doubt, Doubt! A few days later it was gone? Too many other areas to explore up against our mountain side.

"Our gardener advised not to go near it."
The average Mexican's knowledge of which insects are dangerous and which are not is quite ignorant, I have found. Old wives' tales abound.
A place I used to rent had the property's caretakers living next door in a little hovel. One day I saw a praying mantis on the outside wall and called their 5 year old, who was playing in the yard, over to see it. His mom ran over, yelling "Pica, Pica!" They don't bite or sting- they are harmless.
And every Mexican, it seems, has a story about how their tio got bitten by a cancle (whip-tail scorpion, which aren't scorpions at all) and died.
That insect, while horrific looking, have zero toxin and pose no danger to humans. They eat scorpions and other bugs, are very shy, and hide out in dark places. They capture their prey with their pincers, not by injecting them with toxin.
One day, the husband of that caretaker family hoed up all the nice grassy area in front of their casita, turning it into a barren dirt patch. I asked him why he was doing that, and he said because bugs can hide in the grass.

They used to sell Praying Mantis, Leaf bugs, Stick bugs and Scorpions as pets in BC pet stores.
