Daylight Savings Time in U.S. What's Up?
Found this article about the Daylight Savings Time situation. Apparently, many states have passed legislation making it permanent, but cannot enact without the Federal government passing a bill. One was passed by the Senate in March, but congress has not taken up the bill for whatever reason. We will still be switching back and forth for the time being.
On a side note, I brought a gift home with me from Mexico, Covid. Probably got it on the 4 hour plane ride. It is a mild case which is what the vaccines and boosters were suppose to do. Mild head cold symptoms and being lazy around our condo while my body recovers.

That bill will likely expire; no action expected through lame duck session after Tuesday's election.

From yesterday's Washington Post. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2022/11/04/permanent-daylight-saving-time/
Early this Sunday morning, Americans will engage in the annual autumnal ritual of “falling back” — setting their clocks back one hour to conform with standard time.
If some lawmakers had their way, it would mark the end of a tradition that has stretched for more than a century. But a familiar story unspooled of congressional gridlock and a relentless lobbying campaign, this one from advocates that some jokingly call “Big Sleep.”
A bill to permanently “spring forward” has been stalled in Congress for more than seven months, as lawmakers trade jabs over whether the Senate should have passed the legislation at all. House officials say they’ve been deluged by voters with split opinions and warnings from sleep specialists who insist that adopting permanent standard time instead would be healthier, and congressional leaders admit they just don’t know what to do.
“We haven’t been able to find consensus in the House on this yet,” Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) said in a statement to The Washington Post. “There are a broad variety of opinions about whether to keep the status quo, to move to a permanent time, and if so, what time that should be.”
Pallone, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce committee that oversees time-change policies, also said he’s wary of repeating Congress’ previous attempt to institute year-round daylight saving time nearly 50 years ago, which was quickly repealed amid widespread reports that darker winter mornings led to more car accidents and drearier moods.
“We don’t want to make a hasty change and then have it reversed several years later after public opinion turns against it — which is exactly what happened in the early 1970s,” Pallone said.
With lawmakers having hit the snooze button, there is little chance of the legislation being advanced during the lame-duck period that follows next week’s election, congressional aides said.
The bill’s quiet collapse puts an end to an unusual episode that briefly riveted Congress, became fodder for late-night comics and fueled water-cooler debate. The Senate’s unanimous vote in March to allow states to permanently shift their clocks caught some of the chamber’s own members by surprise — and in a reverse of traditional Washington dynamics, it was the House slowing down the Senate’s legislation.

@RoyD..sorry about the covid. I had it in July, worst was 4 or 5 days of sore throat (like I swallowed razor blades) and 1 day of awful body chills at onset. Fully vax'd and 1 booster. Had a neg. test a week after my positive test, but took 2+ weeks to feel normal.
In past 2 weeks was on 5 flights (and 1 rail trip) to/in EU; so far no symptoms. Maybe I have a bit of immunity from July infection??

I took 6 flights on my trip to and around Canada and back this summer. Wore my mask at all times on planes and airports. Never got Covid and I've only had 2 vaxes, no boosters. Masks are the ticket, folks. Wear one whenever in indoor places with lots of people if you want to avoid Covid.

We both have had 2 initial vaccines and 3 Boosters. In the past year, we have driven 15K miles around Mexico over the last 13 months. Mask mandates have varied from State to State but we have chosen to wear ours in high traffic public areas, no matter the mandates in place. Nary the slightest hint of COVID or any other respiratory disease. Masks strictly for ourselves? Nope. What if we are asymptomatic and could infect others? So a two way street for a minor inconvenience!

In many of the Asian countries I have visited (prior to covid), wearing masks is commonplace. I imagine some of that will stick in North America now.

We drove up to the States in September and mask usage seemed much more prevalent in the Torreon and Chihuahua areas than here. Was in the US in many states for 6 weeks and saw very little mask usage.

Re: Daylight Savings Time in U.S. What's Up?
We were in Spain past few weeks. Masks required onboard domestic flights and on trains. But not in stations or terminals. Also required in taxis. The rules were enforced and pretty quickly, too.
Not a lot of masks seen outside of transportation, about the same as here. We donned them a few times in the busy city food markets (not grocery stores, but the main central city markets where crowds could be shoulder to shoulder).
Spain had been the last EU country requiring vax proof or neg. test for non-EU citizens but dropped that policy while we were there (Oct. 21st).

I couldn't give a rats ass whether masks are mandated anywhere or not as far as me wearing one. I don't care if I'm the only person with one in a crowd of 200. If others want to take their chances and be sick, that's up to them. Of course they are making it more risky for everyone, even those of us masked, but there's nothing I can do about people who care about no one but themselves.

Unfortunately, Covid is never going away. Once everyone has caught it enough, they should build up a pretty good tolerance like we have with the flu and cold. Forget all these booster after booster, after booster shots. I had one booster after two initials and that is it for me. Never had a flu shot in my life. If one never wants to catch covid then they will need to mask up forever.

Yep, I have no problem with masking up forever in high risk situations. I don't see it as any different from having to mask up if you go visit someone in the hospital, which has been required long before Covid depending on the hospital ward you are attending, for instance the neo-natal nursery.
As you mentioned, it has been quite commonplace in Asia. And long before Covid you saw a lot of Asians bringing that practice to Canada, masked in public places in, for instance, Richmond, which has a heavily Asian population.

Re: Daylight Savings Time in U.S. What's Up?
Shame on us for not wearing the masks. We wore them on the flight to Guad, but not on the way back. I would say masks should be worn on long flights. We too, have had two vaccine shots and two boosters. We were not able to get the third booster as it was not available yet when we left.
The first day was the worst, chills, fever, harsh throat, but now it is sleeping all the time with chronic fatigue.

How does that make any sense? What's the difference between a long flight and a short one? There is zero logic to that. You can be exposed to someone contagious on a one hour flight just like you can on a 5 hour flight. You are crammed into an inside space with others either way. And the riskiest part of flying when it comes to contracting Covid is not when the plane is in the air, when their air filtering system is turned on, but when people are crowded in the aisles during boarding and deplaning.
One guy posted somewhere about the readings he took when flying. He had no way to measure if there was Covid in the air, but he had a carbon dioxide meter, so monitored the exhaled breath levels. They were super high when boarding and deplaning, but went way down when the plane was in the air.
One of the reasons Covid spreads so easily is that so many people seem to have bizarre ideas about what situations are risky.
Hope you feel better soon.

Re: Daylight Savings Time in U.S. What's Up?
I agree, the plane, while in flight, is not the likely place to catch covid unless you are unlucky enough to be seated right beside an infected person. The air in a jet is completely recirculated every 3 minutes with filters that can remove the covid virus. You are far more likely to catch it in the airport itself.
