Telmex Fiber - what is the latest? Empty Telmex Fiber - what is the latest?

There is a guy installing cable on the house next door (in upper La Floresta). Do you have to order it? Ask for it? Pay for it?What is the deal? How do you get Telmex fiber and what do you have to pay for it?

Cost the same as before with copper wires.....  no increase. But one must give up their wire-based landline and go to VoIP if they wish to keep a Telmex phone.

What are the pros and cons of VOIP? Not really sure what it is.

VoIP = Voice Over Internet Protocol.... in other words it is a phone that runs over the fiber Internet connection, not copper wires the historic way phones work. Digital, not Analog.

TelMex, as they transition to fiber from copper wires, is taking out all copper wire landline phones. Less of a hassle for them to maintain. If one wants to retain a phone.... instead of what many folks are doing/have done by using cellphones...  one will have no option but to take the VoIP phone pro or cons notwithstanding.

So I could still use a regular phone if I wanted to but just not a copper wire one? I don’t want to use cell phones. (Sorry I’m so stupid about this stuff.)

If you go to fibre and VOIP, you will no longer be able to plug an idiot phone directly into the wall jack when the electricity goes out. Modem MUST be working for VOIP to work.

So my only option is cell?

Either your cell phone OR get some kind of back up power that you can plug your modem into. That's why I have a Jackery 240 back up for power.

If it is just having a phone in a power outage that one is worrying about, there is a much less expensive alternative to a solar generator. A small UPS from Steren will cost about $50. Plug your modem into that and you would have hours of phone service.

Agreed. The Jackery has three ways to charge... plug it into a wall to charge (the charge lasts for a VERY long time...over six months) or plug it into your car or plug it into a compatible solar panel. I can keep my laptop, modem, cell phone, two rechargeable fans and a couple of rechargeable lights going for twelve hours with the Jackery 240.
You should also know that Carry Bean has very bad cell coverage in her house.

Also agreed. A Jackery is a good solution if one needs to power a bunch of things for a relatively long time during outages. Just for a phone 'tho.... not so much. Just trying to provide an inexpensive option for use with a VoIP phone so that changing to Telmex fiber doesn't loose phone service during outages.

For the voip phone to work, the modem must also work. If that is the only concern, you still need an alternate source of power that will be enough to power both for as long as necessary.

One caution. You need to observe what the installers do with the old copper cable to your house. Make them remove as much of the old copper cable as possible.

My old copper line connected a pole on the other side of the street with a pole on my side of the street and then to the second floor of my house. The fiber-optic cable follows the same path. When installing it, they attached the fiber cable to the last length of copper cable to pull it to the second floor location. They left the segment of copper cable that crossed the street atop several other fiber cables and hang down into the street where anyone could reach up, pull on it and tear out the fiber cables serving several houses. I asked Tel-Mex to fix this several times but it never happened. I finally had my gardener use a long pruning pole to cut the cable high enough off the ground to eliminate the hazard.

I think I asked the wrong question(s), but I am not sure what the right questions are. I will try this: What is the process or what are the steps involved in switching from my old Telmex copper line (?) wifi to the new Telmex fiber optic line wifi?

Go to the Telmex office and ask to be switchedd/when can you be put on fiber for the Internet rather than your current copper landline setup?

I believe TelMex is going around and upgrading everyone (where possible) to fiber optics. I know several people who said TelMex just showed up out of the blue and upgraded them to fiber. If it's available in your area they should get to you soon.

That's what I remember also Bob, but going/asking might get one a fiber connection 'quicker'. But again, it's Telmex and Mexico so who knows.

TelMex installed my fibre optic last week - 3 blocks west of LCS. I had gone to the office about 6 weeks ago and was told they would add me to the list but that fibre optic cables were installed by district and that mine would be about 4 weeks away. Don't know how the districts are divided but a few folks I know at the far west end of Independencia from me were installed, by district, much earlier. Logic does not apply but I'm a happy camper now.
