Warfarin substitute
Hola
Does anyone here use warfarin or equivalent ? I have been told that warfarin is not available in Mexico and wondered what people use instead. A coumadin. I don't want Eliquis or Xaralto as they are expensive. I am hoping there is something a little less money.
Also please no comments like "cost shouldn't matter " Thanks
TIA

Re: Warfarin substitute
Wife has rare blood disorder, requires blood thinners her whole life. She has been working with the blood specialist at Quality
Care to get her dosages right, INR tests, etc. She too was shocked when warfarin was cancelled. She now uses Fitromtec (Acenocumerol) 110 pesos, Maskaras Pharmacy 376 765 5827. Excellent pharmacy, and they deliver.

Yes, it is an excellent Farmacia.
My hubby used Sintrom for years after both of his femoral arteries were bypassed. His INR was always right where it was supposed to be. Later, some Doctor wanted him to switch to Plavix. He took one look at the price and kept right on with the Sintrom.

The generic for Plavix is Clopidogrel and it is very, very cheap. I discovered it after my first purchase of Plavix which is ridiculously expensive. My cardiologist tells me there is no difference in efficacy.

Thanks. I see it only comes in 75mg and I will see my doctor about it to see what the equivalent to 4.5 mg of warfarin.

Re: Warfarin substitute
When I lived in Ajijic I switched from Warfarin to Sintrom with no problem other than setting the right dosage. 4.5 mg of Warfaring should be about 2 mg of Sintrom, but get frequent INR tests to make sure. Sintrom was readily available.

Re: Warfarin substitute
When was it discontinued? I’ve bought it before to use as a rat poison.

No joke. Crush it and mix with peanut butter.
There was a similar product on the market many years ago.

Re: Warfarin substitute
You can still buy coumadin here. There were production problems about 4 yrs ago. Acenocoumarol is readily available in 4mg doses. Zenwoodle is right, acenocoumarol is cheaper and you don't need as much to maintain proper INR levels. Docs here look at the INR levels AND your bleeding times. As you are using less it goes much further. Runs about $400 pesos for 30 pills.
Still have to watch interactions with other meds and it's not as sensitive to what you eat. Alcohol makes it work TOOOOOOO well. Bruising doesn't seem to be as bad with acenocoumarol.

Re: Warfarin substitute
Many doctors, such as Dr Hector Briseno, insist that their patients go on Eliquis before any surgery. Then there is no need to watch INR levels, no need to worry whether the patient is taking a fake drug, and less worry the patient is forgetting doses, etc. After surgery, you can switch back, but you need three days of stomach injections to do that.

Re: Warfarin substitute
That may be true however eliquis does not work for all heart problems. Dr. H Briseno is also our cardiologist and has prescribed heparin for pre & post surgery - yep stomach injections.CHILLIN wrote:Many doctors, such as Dr Hector Briseno, insist that their patients go on Eliquis before any surgery.
