In search of HUGE WOODEN BEAMS
Has anyone seen or heard of any Madereria selling wood beams that are 6 inch by 6 inch or 8 inch by 8 inch (or in between)? Need to be at least 5 METERS in length. I need five of them.
These are for outside use on a roof and I realize that being pressure treated is a dream too far but ? Cedar?
Any hints in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks

I had to get about 15 of that size. They are palmwood. Very dense and heavy. Termite resistant. Unfortunately I don't know where the builder got them. Somewhere local. Be prepared for sticker shock. They were about $100 US each.

I don't suppose you'd like to give me the name and number of your builder? Dense, heavy, long and termite resistant ticks a lot of wants for me.
I'm not saying that price is no object BUT sometimes ya gotta pay for what you need.
The second house of the three built beside me, has just put up its electric fencing. I'm starting to feel like I'm living in a concentration camp. I want to, not only obstruct that view, but also attach an awning to the beams and arrange the beams in such a way that air can enter the centre courtyard from the east and the west.

Unfortunately he is no longer in business. There is a wood place in Chapala. Across and south of Soriana. I hope you don't plan on doing this yourself as each one of those beams weigh about 200lbs

No, I don't plan on doing it myself. It's not really construction per se. Just placement in a certain order once they are on the roof.
I will go to the Madereria opposite Soriana and see if they can get the palm ones. I didn't even know such a thing existed so thank you for that. I've found a source of Vigas de Palma in Colima. You never know what's possible 'til you ask.

Ask the person who is doing the work if they know of any sources?.

I already have and they didn't know about palm vigas.
I'll get what I want eventually. Everything is possible.

Ferret did the owner of the lumber place give you any suggestions? Our really old house in Mazatlan had the original ebony beams but some were damaged so the architect used guanacastle, fairly expensuve, termite proof and heavy as homemade sin.

I haven't gotten to the lumber place yet. That won't happen until next week. Still letting my fingers do the walking and gathering information.
I am sure Huanacastle (aka Parota) would do the trick but would be a waste for what I want it for.

Cedar is a good alternative for you, it is a semi hard wood and bugs do not like it. Also old beams like oak, etc., the older they get the harder they get.

You could also try at the maderia on the Libramiento next to the hardware store.

I like that hardware store Wide Sky! They have nuts and bolts that I couldn't find anywhere else.
