Oxxo may be running out of beer

Oxxo stores in Mexico are quickly running out of beer after the government shuttered breweries as non-essential businesses last month.

“I don’t want people to get off the call and run to the store, but right now we are probably looking at about 10 days of inventory,” said Juan Fonseca, head of investor relations for Oxxo convenience stores, during a recent conference call with financial analysts.   "I think the government might be afraid if they drink beer, there will be more social interaction,” he said.

It remains to be seen whether the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, or the secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Manuel Villalobos , will agree on a date to reactivate the industry.

Here in San Carlos the rumors started Wednesday and store's were out of beer by Friday. We saw convoy's of pickup's coming in from Guaymas backed up to the half dozen Oxxo's in town and cleaned them out ! We still have a craft brewer that has the business all to himself, as he is not affected, and sell's Growlers. Still plenty of Wine and Liquor , but i'll miss my Dos XXX.

Soriana just opened up all their beer sales. Was there yesterday and all the signs saying you can't buy beer are gone People were purchasing it.

The mayor of Chapala Moises Anaya announced last week on April 30 that retail sales of "alcohólicas de baja graduación" low-grade alcoholic beverages are now allowed once again on a limited schedule from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  In part his decision was made in response to reports that several people were poisoned recently after drinking homemade liquor.  But where will supplies of beer and wine come from if breweries and wineries remain closed?
