Observations Empty Observations

Post by Solovino Sun Sep 11, 2011 7:46 pm

Every so often, the topic of appropriate dress is discussed on this and other boards. And inevitably short pants. While out and about the city the past couple of days, I noticed quite a number of men of all ages wearing shorts. This isn't really a recent trend. Having lived in the city for a long time I have noticed the gradual increase of less formal wear in the hot months of the year. I used to wear shorts in the summer back in the 70s when it was looked on with disapproval. It mortified one of my brothers in law but he always tried to make my life difficult so that just motivated me more. I still jokingly tell my kinds that I was the person that started the trend.

Anyway, in Galerìas on Friday I counted 6 men of different ages. Superama had 3 very fashionably logo-coordinated shorts, shirt, ball cap and the latest running shoes, all sported by men over 50. This morning at the antique tianguis on Avenida Mexico there were numerous and when we ran over to the Mercado de Abastos there were several more. And, 2 dudes wearing dresses were getting into a silver VW Jetta. One was way too ugly to get away with it but the other guy was pretty convincing.

"Dudes in Drag"

When fighting with the traffic and one way streets in San Miguel de Allende, Kathy spotted a "dude in drag" walking along a sidewalk and made the comment that he/she had a really bad rug. Some time later after checking into our hotel, we walked up the hill to Harry's New Orleans Cafe & Oyster Bar & Restaurant planning on grabbing a burger. 2 for 1 margaritas had already started (3:30 or 4pm) and we each ordered a $100MXN cheeseburger with fries with margaritas. Since we were hungry that was the priority and then we looked around the bar and sure enough, the same noticed person was sitting at the bar. This was my first visual of the skin tight jeans, yellow blouse, purse, really bad wig and to top it off a powder blue parasol. He/she was talking to one of the female bartenders and had a deeper voice than I. Four margaritas later over maybe an hour, it was time for him to leave apparently. Four of those margaritas and I would have been crawling out!

Likely construction workers...........jaja.

Now since my uniform of choice is shorts and a t-shirt it is good to hear I won't be sticking out more than necessary. I know I felt "under dressed" in Morelia a couple of years ago.

I think that it may have become more casual since you were there? We met two couples for breakfast at LU at the Hotel Casino and both Kathy and I were wearing shorts and didn't feel under dressed. I caught grief from my MexConnect contact who arranged the get together since he had me pegged to be wearing a Brooks Brothers button down shirt and I showed up wearing a polo shirt with shorts. Both of the resident women were wearing capris (stretched shorts).

So you like to go to the mall and watch guys, cool, different strokes for different folks.

Gotta get some new material buddy.

We were rolling in the very pimpin Yaris today in Andares, should have met us at the Outback! Last night we partied at Santo Cachorro.

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.

Thousands of silver Jettas in this town, sweetheart.

Just my opinion, but shorts and a t-shirt is a bit more casual than shorts and a collared polo shirt or starched shirt with buttons. Both shorts and shirt should be free of wrinkles when one heads out the door after looking in the mirror.

Well to tell you the truth, unless I'm going to a function that requires a dress code I don't really give a rats ass what I am dressed like as long as I like it and it is comfortable. I know if it looks too bad my sweetie would intervene and suggest something else........

Now Snowdaddy made a keen observation in Juan's Globo Regatta photos. Go and look through them and see if you can see even one Mexican male adult wearing shorts............NOB most would be wearing shorts on a day such as that.

How about this? The low temp that day was 58.8 degrees and the high temp at 6pm was 78.3 degrees. I am surprised that more weren't wearing coats, vests, sweaters or sweatshirts! I remember when we were in Patzcuaro and perfectly comfortable wearing shorts in the evenings while the "natives" were bundled up. Is it a matter of staying warm or comfortable?

But if it was at the coast it would have been completely different.

Sorry, I didn't realize we were talking about the coast. I thought the initial observations were made in Guad........

I do notice more men wearing shorts but personally would rather blend in although that might include buying more Polo clothes with large logos, at least in Guad.

They were. And then you were speaking of Chapala. And then I added an observation about the coast.
