Movie Recommendations, New and Old
Return to Paradise 1998
I've heard about this film for years, finally downloaded it, wow!
Takes place in Malaysia. Has Joaquin Phoenix. Great actor.
One of the best ever: Perfume, the story of a murder.
I think it's a British/French production.
Takes place a few Centuries ago. A castaway baby born in a fish market has the most acute sense of smell ever known to man. Grows up and becomes a perfumer. His final formula consists of the essence of 12 females he is drawn to by way of their scent. There are 12 murders but it's done tastefully, no gore.

And Platoon.
I watched Parker last night. JLo is a good actor apart from her obvious attributes.
A Million Ways to Die in the West. Very hip comedy.

Box of Moonlight with John Turturro and Sam Rockwell. Comedy/Drama. Watch an uptight engineer turn into a human being. Worth it just for the opening aerial fly over and theme music.

Re: Movie Recommendations, New and Old
Perfume.....WOW....totally creeped me out but my oldest daughter thinks it is exceptional.
Didn't get the best ratings but I thought it was hilarious and a great movie - "Escape of Prisoner 614"
"Set in the 1960s and influenced equally by offbeat Coen Brothers comedies and classic John Ford westerns, The Escape of Prisoner 614 follows Deputy Jim (Martin Starr) and Deputy Thurman (Jake McDorman), two well-intentioned but bumbling Sheriff’s Deputies who after being fired by their overbearing Sheriff (Ron Perlman), decide to go after an escaped prisoner (George Sample III) in hopes of getting back their jobs. But when they realize that the supposed murderer they have hunted down is an innocent victim of a racist judicial system, they face a moral dilemma -- return the prisoner and be hailed as heroes, or act on their principles in pursuit of true justice.
"
Also really liked "Cop Car". Sort of brutal but excellent.
"Kevin Bacon (The Following, HBO's Taking Chance, Mystic River) stars in director Jon Watts' delightful throwback thriller Cop Car. When two good-natured but rebellious young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford) stumble across an abandoned cop car hidden in a secluded glade they decide to take it for a quick joyride. Their bad decision unleashes the ire of the county sheriff (Kevin Bacon) and leads to brutal consequences. (C) Focus World"

Bagdad Cafe. Loved it, theme song too.
Cop Car. Used to have it, got lost.
Prisoner 614. in the cooker.
Training Day, Denzel Washington, filmed in my old neighborhood. Great representation of the Chicanos.
Fargo. Too funny. Any Coen Brothers film.
ExMachina.

Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Abyss, and, for a really sweet, lovely 1.5 hours, Second Hand Lions.

Alien, yes. The first of the franchise was great sci-fi; atmospheric and claustrophobic. Using Giger was inspired. The subsequent offerings got weaker with every iteration.Lady Otter Latté wrote:Alien
Blade Runner: the original, not the tepid remake.

Blade runner was awesome as were Terminator and T2. Lets not forget the original Predator with Arnie.

This is an outlier but I loved it "Days of Heaven" (Terence Malik) - be patient, have a glass of something.

Re: Movie Recommendations, New and Old
Well, it is often recommended, but there are so many new people here in the last few years, here it is again: "La Ley de Herodes". A Mexican movie....so funny.

Now to the real reason I'm posting: the word "outlier". Why am I seeing this word all of the sudden? Never heard it in my life until recently but have now seen it in print 4 different times. Is this being popularized by some TV series or something? Please don't tell me it's a Game of Thrones word.

There was an art-house theater on Georgia Street in Vancouver that ran that movie for over a year. Great film. Never Cry Wolf with Charles Martin Smith ran there for about as long.

Ha ha - the one that gets me is "bad actors' meaning terrorists and the like. Are they really bad at acting? If so they have a lot of company!Rosa Venus wrote: Now to the real reason I'm posting: the word "outlier". Why am I seeing this word all of the sudden? I forgot about Never Cry Wolf! GREAT movie. “Goooood idea,” was a family catch phrase for a long time after we watched that movie.
