Military in Chapala... ?
20 minutes ago, I got a post on my FB page of large number of military garbed soldiers on foot & in vehicles... Anyone over there know what's going on? Posted by a mexicana I know, reliable, not fake news...

Re: Military in Chapala... ?
The local government has called in the military to help calm the situation in response to recent shootings. It is not the first time this has happened and likely will not be the last.

Thx Lady O. So there were a couple more shootings in the last 48 hours in Chapala I heard. don't know much else. Even after 4 years here, this is new stuff for me... Will they be patrolling down the caraterra towards Ajijic? I have an appt in Riberas... just wondering..

Re: Military in Chapala... ?
The last time the military showed up in this area was 2012, and they even erected a structure at the West end of town to facilitate checking vehicles. It's still there on the right side of the road in the tope area. There had been some horrendous incidents of violence. Things are apparently heating up among the gangs/cartels again, especially in Guadalajara.

Not to mention the 19 bodies in plastic bags found in an aqua negra ditch yesterday outside of Ixlahuacan. . .

We heard that. We're just east of SJC. Sounded like it was up on the mountain.

Since we are still not in residence lakeside I was wondering if the military presence has been very obvious? I have not seen any posts about it for a couple weeks.

Me neither. Haven't seen them anywhere around Ajijic or West Chapala. Or places in-between.

I haven't seen any either. But, I would imagine that their presence would be more effective at night when all the creeps crawl out from under their rocks. Dunno.

Re: Military in Chapala... ?
Military presence makes tourists nervous, even local Mexicans. When we lived in Puerto Vallarta they used to send a Navy brigade every Easter, and a navy gunship patrolled the Bay every day. They setup a large tent/command post on the beach right in front our place. Right beside our deck, at eye level, was an always manned 50 calibre machine gun, on a heavy truck bed tripod. People would walk the beach, see us sitting on our deck with cervesas and margaritas, and the would stop and stare, thinking who are these people with all this protection. Many took pictures, hoping we were someone famous. One Canadian asked Ms. Chillin, "are those guns real?". They stopped this beach occupation, I think because of too many business complaints.

Interesting . . . If or when Anaya deems it necessary to summon the military perhaps they will be stationed there again.
Or. They're fixing up a recycling center. lol

Maybe they can recycle the criminals into law abiding citizens... or compost. Whatever.
