Los 5 Potrillos
Los 5 Potrillos has reopened to rave reviews. It is open 5 days a week from 12 to 8:00. A breakfast buffet on Sundays.
Prices super reasonable. If anyone from this board has been there please review it for us.

Cinco Potrillos, Ixtlahuacan
It is "Cinco Potrillos" in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, just over the hill.
If it were just 'almost as good' as it used to be, that would be great, but, all reports indicate that it is even better now!
If you used to go there, please go again. If you are new to the area, you are in for a treat. Take friends, as it is that kind of place, with room for many at several large tables.
The church with the fantastic murals is very close, as is the plaza, for an after diner walk.

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
One of our first Inside Lakeside lunch swarms was at Los Cinco Potrillos. Maybe we are due for another one there?

Excellent update from TOB.
“Great news for fans of Los 5 Potrillos in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.
New manager, Salvadore; new menu, all food and drink stocked. It's been (re)opened for about 3 months.
Salvadore impressed us with his hard work to turn this old favorite around. He's running a Sunday, all you can eat buffet, from 8:30 am to 1 pm. He's put a grill out in the dining room to display his cooking, in addition to the buffet. 80p adults, 50p for children under 12.
He's putting in a pizza oven and will start offering pizzas around December 1st. He spent 15 years working at a pizza place in the States, so I'm looking forward to this.
The prices are really reasonable, a lot of dishes 45 - 60p. Plates, for example, mole poblano, 60p. Burritos, 45p.
He's planning a New Year's Eve party with mariachis. Lots of energy and creativity going into this, as you can see. I'm wishing him good luck. Have a lot of fond memories of this place.

Then there was this excellent review.
Four of us braved the pouring rain and went there Let me put it this way: CINCO POTRILLOS IS BACK! We decided to test by ordering the fajitas which were always far better than anything available locally. We ordered two orders, beef and shrimp. What came out was two huge platters of sizzling perfect fajitas. Now all of us were big fans of the place when Pancho was alive and we loved the fajitas the best. If anything these were even better.
To the mix add in a perfectly fixed side of guacamole, very good beans, rice and tortillas. This was celebration night so there were three rounds of a tequila/mineral water with lime, 9 in all and 3 Indios for me. Total tab came to 840 pesos, $42, plus tip. The new owner both served and cooked as it was a slow night with all the rain. Clearly he knows how to both cook and wait tables, service was impeccable.
Currently he is open 7 days per week from noon to 8PM, or a little later on the weekend and has a breakfast brunch on Sunday which appears to be a screaming bargain even at lakeside prices, 80 pesos. We intend to try that real soon.
Music is occasional and only later in the evenings on weekends. It was lovely quiet there when we went.
Start bringing your guests arriving at the airport in the afternoons for a great meal and a great deal and the enjoyment of the murals in the church and on the plaza. The main street and much of the plaza has been refurbished and is very nice indeed.
Our group gave it 8 thumbs up!

As a side note, there used to be a well stocked ladies lingerie shop nearby.
Is it still there?

Why not in Ajijic at the new Restaurant located where Salvador's was? There is a sign on said remodel saying that it is about to open

Maybe it would be good to wait until we hear what the menu and prices are, eh? Better yet, after someone tries it and reports on it.

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
I was hoping someone would make a negative remark. I remember very well, the last day Salvador's was open 7 months ago on May 1st. Sadly it closed the next day.
Every month or so we would hear that in only another month, the new restaurant would be opening. Well finally, only 7 months later, it will be opening soon (it would appear) at least that is what the new sign says which is hanging on the side of the remodeled building says. I sure hope that it turns out to be a popular site charging reasonable prices

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
It looks like the new name is Spago¡¡ Is Woñfgang Puck retiring in Ajijic or is it just another case of name rip off? Hopefully the food will be as good as Spago´s

Hahaha I'll say. If we don't see Mister Puck hanging around Ajijic the verdict will be tacky! Spago.

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
I've eaten at both "Cinco Potrillos" in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, JAL, Mexico, and "Spago" in Beverly Hills, CA, USA.
The one thing they have in common is they've both been overrated for decades.
Provecho!

That restaurant is a little too far out for those who don't drive, isn't it?

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
Puck was good when he started but then like many he went commercial and it is now a chain restaurant. I do not know what the food taste like now but a little of LA trendy food would not be so bad here or even trendy Condessa..

Re: Los 5 Potrillos
Puck, Jeremiah Tower, and Alice Waters were kicking some serious culinary butt when I started cooking professionally in the BayA. It was an exciting time to be in food with them and the local farms to table movement. Some badass food came out of those kitchens!
You're right Brigitte, things change. ;)
