Your math is a little off according to the link...
A typical Canadian family of four, with a household income of $138,008, can expect $12,935 of their paid taxes (around $55,000 a year) to go towards health care.
• A single Canadian adult, with an income of $44,348, can expect $4,640 of his or her paid taxes (around $19,800 a year) to go towards health care.
So, the family of four is paying $269.48 Canadian per month per person and the single adult is paying $386.67 Canadian per month.
Not very much imho considering that the population of Canada is about 1/10th of the size of the U.S.
The really COOL thing about those numbers is that even people who pay NO taxes are still covered... and THAT is priceless.

Re: Free Healthcare!
You are correct. A middle class family is paying a little over $1000CN a month for healthcare.

Re: Free Healthcare!
I just got worldwide medical insurance (except USA) for my wife and I through a company called VUMI. A $250 USD deductible for $316.00 CDN per month. Seems pretty reasonable now. I can even use it in Canada.

Sounds good, and looked at their Senior plan. There is a waiting period, but couldn't find anything about pre-existing condition restrictions.
If they take everybody, that would be great, but that sounds too good to be true......so where would that information be?

You would need to contact them. My agent is located in PV. He is with Guardian Insurance. His name is Michael Keller. He represents several different insurers.

Re: Free Healthcare!
CanuckBob, there are core, regional and specialty plans. Which plan did you settle on?
It's interesting that this "Health Plan" operates differently than some of the typical insurance plans - Vumi appears more like a contracted service with hospitals and docs under contract. Makes sense I guess especially if your an expat staying put year round and there are hospitals in your city.

Re: Free Healthcare!
I got the expat VIP bronze package. It is good anywhere in the world except the USA. It is nothing like you have described.

As long as those hospitals and docs don't cancel their contracts.
CB, did you see many Guad hospitals and docs in your plan? Any local docs?

Re: Free Healthcare!
I have no idea what John in Vallarta is talking about. Read the policy I posted. It is nothing like John has described. VUMI lists just about every 5 star hospital in GDL as partners. You can go to any hospital or doctor you like anywhere in the world except the USA.
Here is a list of hospitals that directly accept payment from VUMI:
