Lots of stuff that is mainstream now was pretty entertaining in the past for lots of people. Madame Curie and Lister are a couple of names that pop into my head. And who was it that used to say that the world was flat... oh yeah, everybody. Heart transplant? No way. Transfusion? Blasphemy!
Science does have a way of catching up with proof. I always remember my home room science teacher in Grade 7. Around the classroom at the top of the wall, in giant letters, was written:
The difficult we do at once... The impossible takes a little longer

Re: Flu shot availability
It is interesting that the whole MMR vaccine autism link started with false reporting on studies done to discredit the triple vaccine. Why was the link made? Well the (now de-licensed) Dr. Andrew Wakefield stood to make millions with his own single vaccine, which would have been rendered obsolete by the MMR. He then concocted a diagnosis called autistic enterocolitis (which doesn't exist) to discredit MMR vaccine. He then in fine entrepreneurial spirit developed an autism diagnosis kit which stood to make millions if he could convince people that MMR is dangerous and could lead to autism. It was the biggest scam with the greatest danger - and instead of him being labeled public enemy number one, anti-science fanatics hailed him as a hero.
Don't be fooled by the dubious business practices of big Pharma and in-cahoots doctors. They are reprehensible, but it does nothing to detract from the science of evidence based medicine.
