Chapala taxi
Looking for the number of the Chapala taxi dispatcher, or just a local taxi driver. I am staying in Chapala and temporarily without a car. This will be for short lakeside trips only. Thanks.

Re: Chapala taxi
There are two taxi stands ("sitios") in Chapala, one in front of the plaza and the other in front of the bus station a little to the north. Here are the numbers.
Chapala Plaza Taxi Sitio: 376-765-3511
Chapala Bus Station Sitio: 376-765-4697
It's important that you speak enough Spanish to let them know where you want to be picked up. It's often the case that no one will answer as all the taxis are out. Just keep dialing more numbers in that case!
Here are a few cell numbers for individual drivers:
Jose 331-197-3832
Juan Manuel Gutiérrez (speaks English) 333-130-5604
Cruz Moreida (speaks English) 331-429-3051 or landline 376-766-0769

Re: Chapala taxi
Yep, I second UBER. Far less expensive and more reliable than the local taxi's. So simple to use once you download the app.

Dear husband and I had great success using Uber to and from the Camionera Central in Talaquepaque last week, but Uber was a complete fail today when I confirmed a ride from Gloriosa Salon on the libramiento back home to Chapala. I waited and waited and waited, watching the little car on my app hesitate, turn around, go the opposite direction, turn around again, come towards me, turn around again, etc. etc. Finally, fifteen minutes later, it said the driver had canceled the ride. I guess he came up with a more lucrative fare than driving me from San Antonio to Chapala. Very disappointing. But I will continue to experiment.

Re: Chapala taxi
And that was the only UBER car available? Did you call back and try to rebook a ride? Maybe the driver couldn't find the shopping area?
Weird. And not good for business for them to just cancel your ride request.

Uber isn't an option for me because I don't have a smart phone. Anyway, I can't help feeling some sympathy for the taxistas that are finding it harder and harder to make a living!

Re: Chapala taxi
The UBER guys need jobs too. It's kinda like feeling sorry for the Autozone guys cause Orma Auto opened up down the street..... No?

Totally agree. Or be late to work because the taxista lied to you and never showed up! F'em
Taxistas have 2 options: provide better service and longer hours or become a UBER driver.
My eyes are not puddling up for the, it is simply competition. Nada mas. All the rules of competition apply, step up or step out.

Re: Chapala taxi
I hope they do all become UBER drivers. I don't even mind if they boost the rates. They are priced too low IMO. I haven't ever had a driver accept a job and then cancel but I have found for very short trips there are " no drivers available" yet when I change to further fare there is. They need a $50 peso minimum or something.

Re: Chapala taxi
There is no way he could have been lost. All of them have a smart phone with GPS -- the little blue dot was exactly where I was standing. There were a couple of other Uber cars on the map on my phone (not the one I supposedly had a ride with), but they were heading the opposite direction, so I didn't try again as I'd already been waiting fifteen minutes. I figured that it would be just as quick for me to walk down the libramiento, cross the carretera and catch a bus, which is what I did. Not nearly as luxurious as taking an Uber, but much more efficient at that point, and certainly cheaper. I haven't given up on taking Uber at Lakeside, but I did yesterday.

I imagine UBER tracks the number of requests that result in a "no driver available" message and will adjust things accordingly.

Re: Chapala taxi
Here is a FREEBE.
I've had a couple experiences NOB where I couldn't spot the UBER. Both these were at airports with a lot of traffic at the private transport pick up area. Plus, Fl. does not reqire a front plats. So when there are several cars that would fit the description and you can't see the plate, you have 2 minutes and the driver leaves.
My solution? I had some 12"X12" vinyl signs made. UBER color and logo and "UBER" in large white letters under the logo.
Rolls up to nothing. You take it out and hold it when waiting foran UBER in a crowded area. Works every time. If you want, you can cover the word UBER w/your name (the driver has that."
I have three of them if anyone wants one. I'm in Chapala Haciendas #2.
That's it.

I know I'm in Mexico and should learn Spanish BUT - I'm old!
Is the UBER App in English or do I need to read/speak Spanish ?
