A large elderly gringo with dog was attacked by a knife wielding man, slightly cut in chest/neck area and money taken.  Dog also slashed at.  Happened at corner of Pedro Moreno and 16 September.  Robber is tall, thinnish, about 40 years and speaks pretty good English.  Went westward on 16 September.  Helpful men in red garbage truck came in answer to yells and phoned police.

Pedro Moreno (Aquiles Serdan, south of Ocampo), intersects with Independencia and not 16 de septiembre, which is east of Morelos/Colon, if this is where the attack occurred.

Just so people know where it happened.

I was wondering about that. I thought I knew all the streets that intersected with 16 de Septiembre and hadn't heard of this one.

Why call the police after the incident? They will probably just say to go to the station and make a report.

BTW, is the Ministerio Publico strictly civil?

This incident happened outside my kitchen window on Pedro Moreno. I heard yelling and opened the window to check...the attacker had attempted to stab both the individual and his dog without success. He did not want the police called..... although somewhat later a nearby trash truck had
already called the police. So I guess that it was in same way reported to the police... I don't believe that the individual pursued the matter.

That is the problem.. if people do not put a report at the MP nothing happens. The MP is the one investigating here not the police so if that guy gets caught he will only be charge for the things on record. no reporting no charging the guy who will continue.. Not that anyone will ever be caught...but not reporting continues the old cycle..

In my opinion nothing would happen even if the victim went to the considerable inconvenience of making an MP report. The original message was posted as a public warning.

At the same time the same warning was placed on Facebook. Within minutes several Facebook users responded accusing the original poster of being a liar, a fantasist, a troll. Some of the language used was very vulgar. None of the persons posting had been within four blocks of the incident and yet somehow mysteriously knew that the incident had never happened.

Fortunately the cut to the victim’s neck was minor and quickly healed. He doesn’t use that rather lonely block to the Malecon any more and walks the dog on a different better-travelled route.

The original poster doesn’t use Facebook any more

Having been involved with the Ministerio Publico I can tell you first-hand that they take reports, review them and then pass them on to the detectives, which is a totally different department. I know since I talked to the detectives.

The major problems with reporting something include: 1) How do you I.D. the bad guy? 2) Who in the government is going to do what? 3) In the thousand and one chance they do catch the bad guy, your identity is now known to him and probably his friends. Enough said there.

The only time I would report something would be where there is insurance involved and it's required you make a report.

As for Facebook, if you haven't seen it, go go Google and put in "Dave the Mind Reader."

Post by brigitte Fri Jan 12, 2018 8:00 pm

Several years ago I helped the MP .. I agreed to help them when they had an emergency only.. So I got called late sometimes at night and so on , and I can tell you that they have pictures of a whole lot of bad guys they will show you.. You have to describe the perp and then they match the description to some of their pictures.. They have got people and the ones they got all all several crimes under their belt and several denuncias. One time they called me because they were on a dead line to have a denuncia or they had to release the guy. They knew he had attacked someone at gun point but they did not have a denuncia and could not hold the man without a denuncia so I helped them convinced the people who had been attacked to put 2 denuncias..

Without a denuncia the criminal walk freely.. not that they do not do that anyways but it is your duty to report to the MP i..
The 2 denuncia put the guy in jail for a while anyways..

Sadly, this is all too common around here - victim blaming. A couple of months ago, I got mugged in Chapala - in many ways my own fault: drunk, alone, dark deserted street - I might as well have been wearing a sign. I posted about it on facebook as a reminder to others not to become complacent (as I had). I received a fair amount of vitriol from people convinced it never happened who were nowhere near the place at the time.

Such is life Lakeside.

Yes, I'm sorry to hear that too, Axixic. sounds like you bounced back well.

It is amazing the things people say to people who have been victims of very bad circumstances. They must have a lot of fear.

On Ave De Riberas between Pepe Guizar and Ave Los Redes. I think it was a circumstantial thing - the guy saw a drunk gringo alone turn onto a dark street and decided to take advantage. He might even have followed me from the bar, I don't know.

Post by Retired Fed Thu Apr 19, 2018 11:26 am

I just read through this thread. I'm glad that the people who have been accosted are OK. Much of this is based on "situational awareness" and your ability to defend yourself if need be. Do NOT be afraid to report to Ministerio Publico. They amass a huge amount of information on criminals and are very good at their jobs. A local mid-30's thug had stolen the battery out of my Honda Accord 3 times over 4 years. One day, the neighbors all came and said he was trying to break into my Ford conversion van. They had run him off but I'd had enough. I jumped in the car with my brother in law and all the neighborhood kids knew what was going on... They were running around on bicycles, telling us, "He just hot tacos here." And, "He's visiting another criminal there." When we caught him, I jumped out of the car and chased him down to hold him until the municipal police got there... The guy is good at running. I was on the US Air Force track team and can still outrun many people 30 years younger than me... But this guy was fast. I couldn't catch him. He even threw his tacos high in the air, they landed being me, as he was yelling "Ayudame! Ayudame!" I went back to my cuñado's car, and as the local kids came to tell us where he was going, the thug's friend threw a beer bottle at our car as we were backing up. He missed. We took off for the thug's house, the kids racing on their bikes to watch the confrontation... (I'll diminish this after I charge my phone)

Stabbed and robbed in Ajijic Saturday 10.00 am Empty Re: Stabbed and robbed in Ajijic Saturday 10.00 am

Post by Retired Fed Fri Apr 20, 2018 1:46 pm

Anyway, I didn't get back to this to finish my experience in just one comment... So... We arrived at the thug's house the exact time he did. He started screaming for help, he was terrified. The door handle broke at the exact moment I tried to get out and hold him until the cops got there. So I had to climb out the passenger window. This gave him just enough time to get over to his door and beat on it. His mother opened the door and his father and older brother grabbed him, pulled him inside, and they slammed the door in my face just as I lost my grip on him. We called municipal police, we waited until they came. They talked to the family, then they talked to us again. We wrote a police report for them on the spot, then went to Ministerio Publico and wrote another complaint there. The next day we went to the city police, got our copy of the complaint and took it to Ministerio Publico. Both the city police and the Ministerio Publico had hundreds of complaints about this guy, who I'd never met before but my wife's family knew him well. He has raped and sexually harassed and attacked over 100 women. He also has been the culprit in over 200 car break ins. He's been the culprit in a few dozen home burglaries. Yet, every time he was arrested, he was let go for some reason. I called on my experience and my contacts to finish the problem of the "Chivero" (goat herder) attacking women and robbing. We asked for a patrol to check on us daily since the guy had a history of violence. When the city police would come, they'd talk with my wife and I for a few moments. I'd use that opportunity (preplanned) to let them know that I know Guanajuato laws, and that if the Chivero comes inside my walls we will call them to come pick up his body. We told Ministerio Publico the same thing. So, an effort was made to make something stick to him, and he is now serving a few years in penitentiary. When I see how Mexicans and Americans lay down at the sign of any threat, I get a little angry. As my MMA instructor always says FREQUENTLY, you have the right to intelligently defend yourself. They knew I meant business, because many of the police men and women are competitors and judges at the interstate martial arts competition where I am invited as a guest master and judge and referee. We talk, they know what I used to do, they know what the laws are in Guanajuato. The cops here all know who I am and I train some of them. They also know that when I tell them that a man who threatens my household safety or my wife or me is going to be in a lot of trouble, I am to be taken seriously. For the most part, the thugs know who I am and give me a respectful berth to allow us to exist unhindered here. Problem now is many new guys from Guadalajara are moving in, and 19 people were killed in a 5 day period ending last week in my quaint little town. Doesn't matter to them, they just kill. So, we've had to go into low profile living even more than our neighbors... 2 of whom are dead, murdered by the CJNG over the past few months. They used to be called "Matazetas" because they killed the Zetas, disagreeing with their murder, extortion and sequestering tactics. Now they've changed their name and they have adopted all the tactics of the Zetas whom they formed to kill, in protest. They threatened my wife's uncle, a rich man, that he must now pay $40,000 pesos per week to them or they'd kill him. He said "I'll pay you more, but I want to talk to the leader of your cartel directly first." (They never asked again, proving it was rogue CJNG soldiers attempting extortion on their own, unsanctioned by the leader in Guadalajara.) I moved away from Saltillo, Coahuila in 2012 after 23 years there after the Zetas had a huge shootout in front of my house downtown. I'd been around gunfire a LOT in my life and I'd prefer to not be near it anymore. I hunt, in Italy, in the USA, and here in Mexico. But when guns are used against humans I don't want to be anywhere near that. This situation is different, my wife and her entire family are here. I can't just pick up and move. We are praying, however... That God will end this ridiculous gun violence in Mexico.

Update on the knife wielding attacker? Was he ever caught? Does anyone know who he is? Photos? What did Ministerio Publico say when reports were made? I'm offering to come spend a week in a hotel and find the guy, have a heart to heart talk with him. But I'll need your help ahead of time to identify him. I'll want to sit down with some of your leaders and talk with you. Let me know when the robber is ID positive. I'm coming to visit.
