Shared office space
Hello again.
My wife and I will be moving to the area late next year. She will be telecommuting and we will need a reliable internet connection with at least 10mbps. We do not want the need for good internet service to dictate where we will live. If we rent a house in an area that does not have good internet, are there shared office spaces with good internet anywhere in Ajijic/Chapala that you can rent?
Thanks.

Re: Shared office space
10mbps (on average) is about the best you can expect with either Telmex or Telecable and that all depends on where you choose to live. Many people have far less. You could go with Telcel which I believe has been reported higher but that will require a relatively expensive data plan especially if she streams stuff.....
If 10 is the minimum you require it will definitely dictate where you choose to live....IMO. I'm not sure of any "office" place offering higher.

Me either.
And my internet in SA is so slow this afternoon that dial-up would be better! Its not even fast enough to do the Ookla test. A guy I was posting with today lost his internet completely for most of the afternoon. Ugggggg. How is anyone going to run sophisticated hospital equipment and such with this kind of internet? The more houses built, rhe more fraccs built, the slower and slower we get. Wonder what will happen when they get that complex in beside Coke. Uggg

I guess we are spoiled here with Xfinity giving us 150mbps! I was hoping that there might be certain business areas with solid internet that might rent out space.

Re: Shared office space
Not that I am aware of. I have heard that they are running (or already have?) a fiber optic line into the area which is probably what something like a hospital would have.
Trailrunner, why does hospital equipment require a high speed connection to the internet? Just curious?

Re: Shared office space
What potential newcomers need to keep in mind is that they would be moving to the central highlands of Mexico. When I moved here nine years ago I was delighted that I had internet, period. It was slow and intermittent but I had it. Internet seems to have gotten slower while expectations get higher. Like Trailrunner, I can not imagine what all the additional building will do to internet speeds. I think they will get worse before they get better.

Re: Shared office space
I had read a thread on Facebook regarding internet speed (posted Aug 30) and there was a gentleman in SAT who gets +/- 16.41 down / 2.56 up; you may want to contact him and see what he is doing. I believe he stated he works remotely from home and internet speed is critical https://www.facebook.com/groups/397945103600106/search/?query=internet%20speed

Re: Shared office space
There are areas where internet is much faster than the 10 Mb/sec down by 0.5 Mb/sec up I have in Ajijic Especially in place near Chapala and the Maskaras Medical Clinic where the Maskara Clinic has a business not residential internet account or connection with Telmex.
For many of you lakeside, you will say the following results are Fake. They are not. I have checked with my laptop one day and with my iPhone other days.
The last time I was there on Aug 10th, I got 26.6 down by 10.18 Mb/sec up. If you do not believe me, and if you see the Doctors at the Maskaras Clinic, drop by ask them for their wifi password and do a speed test. What is highly different about this business account is the relationship of the upload speed to the download speed, the two speeds both very fast are much closer to the other than is the case with a homeowners policy.
Shown below is a test to Guadalajara from up north I share this speed test with you to suggest that you use ookla for your speed testing, not to show the very fast results

Re: Shared office space
It's a crap shoot. Depends not only on your location but your lines and how everything works together. I had terrible problems for seven months in this little house I bought. A gentleman who used to work for Telmex came and, for 300 pesos, climbed the pole on the street around the corner from me and found a corroded connection. Lady O had her handyman do the same on her own roof and her speed improved too (if I remember correctly). Now, I've had a solid connection since February and my speed is TWENTY mps down and FOUR mps up. and I'm in lower Riberas paying 599 pesos a month.
Why? Don't really know. Mike the ComputerGuy is in upper Riberas and gets twice the speed I do for the same price.
There is no rhyme nor reason... there is only tenacity to keep trying everything possible to get what you want and need.
Have a friend in Rancho Alegre (just this side of Joco) who has taken the extraordinary step of making a complaint with Profeco (Mexico's Better Business Bureau) against Telmex. She has made over 25 complaint work orders since January with Telmex and she is not backing down. Las Fuentes to the west of her and El Chante to the east have much better service. WTF?

Re: Shared office space
So, Pete, you're saying if you have a business account with TelMex you will get faster speeds???
Computer Guy did an informal poll on speeds from posters and the normal speed for SAT is 5. I can live with that, but lower than 5 is a drag.
Everyone says speeds depend on your distance from the box. I am several blocks from the box. I stopped a guy working on the box a couple of days ago and he confirmed that for me.
I also think Ferret is right that one should have their wires and connections etc checked as well. I haven't done that yet, because as soon as I get ready to do it my speed jumps back to 5. My speeds are mostly low in the afternoons around comida/siesta time when everyone is home.

Re: Shared office space
I can not swear to the fact that this is why Maskaras Clinic get's great speeds from Telmex. But that is what one of the young lady receptionists told me. And it sure makes a lot of sense.
Sadly where I live, although I have the ability to get a much faster speed than 10 Mb/sec down according to a Telmex tech who came to the house, Sadly they do not have sufficient bandwidth in my neighborhood to offer that type of speed.
Oh and when the technician at the Telmex office opens up my account on a Telmex computer the screen reads that the line between my house and my connection to the internet (DSLAM card) is 1,070 meters from my house or my modem which is about how far my car says it is following the telephone lines to the Telmex office.

Re: Shared office space
I'm told speeds in Guad are very fast and that we get our bandwidth from Guad so by the time it gets all the way down here it's pretty lame.

Re: Shared office space
We could have much higher speeds if we had a larger information highway to allow more data to come and go from our slightly isolated position and a place like Guadalajara I guess that means not more lanes for more vehicle traffic but more fiber optic lines or something like that for more data traffic

Re: Shared office space
That's my understanding too, Pete. So all that is required to bring us up to speed is an infrastructure upgrade and investment from Sr. Slim.

Re: Shared office space
I have had spurts of over 20mbps but it is few and far between. I have also had times where it is less than 5mbps. Most times I check it is around 10mbps. Perhaps Telmex does have "business" speeds available. That would be a good question to ask them using Maskara Clinic as the example.
Pete are you sure Maskara isn't using a cellular connection?

Re: Shared office space
When I lived in Ajijic I averaged 5MB down. First place I lived in Chapala I was averaging the same but then upgraded to the (so called) 40MB plan (599 pesos) and my speeds went up to about 10MB. I moved 2 1/2 blocks in Chapala and my speed (still on the 40MB plan) was way down and service was intermittent. After many calls to Telmex, they sent out a technician who checked the line, climbed the pole and did some soldering up there. My speed here is now consistently at about 8MB down (still on the 40 MB plan).
My conclusion: The speed you get depends on location and uncorroded connections.

Is there anyone consistently getting 20mbps or above on TelMex?

Re: Shared office space
I know a Telmex business line will support a fixed IP address, the rest are dynamic. Some people say it shouldn't make a difference, but if you are using a line with no other traffic, it should be much faster. The trouble is the expense, I think I remember it was $1,000 pesos per month just for the basic account - then the add ons.

Yes, you could see on the modem that it was from Telmex, say I, going by memory from up here in Seattle

Telmex definitely offers business plans. Every time I'm in the Ajijic office with a client I see the flyers promoting the various plans. How well they deliver on the promoted speeds I don't know.
