FISH AND CHIPS
One of my good friends has had the year from hell with colon cancer, chemo, multiple trips to the hospital and all the misery no one wants. He's originally a Brit and one of his favorite things is Fish n Chips. He's finally recovering his appetite and wants the "good kind". Nueva Posada ain't what it used to be for that dish, and he was quite disappointed in Perry's version. It's not one of my own faves, so would the Fish and Chips lovers out there suggest which they think is the best and it would be a real treat for a recovering sick friend.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Jus Chilling isn't bad but unfortunately most restaurants around here are using Basa (or some equally mushy white fish). Try to find someone that uses fresh Mahi Mahi (Dorado) as that is the closest thing you will find around here to Halibut or Cod. Maybe Perry's?

The Brew House in West Ajijic has good fish and chips! It's located on the lakeside of the carreterra on De las Flores #25, just east of the cemetery.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Lake Taco used to have the Mahi Mahi option for their fish and chips. It was a bit more but worth it. I have not looked at the menu in a while but guess they still offer it.

Perry's was the one he tried last. He was disappointed. Thanks for the Mahi mahi suggestion.CanuckBob wrote:Jus Chilling isn't bad but unfortunately most restaurants around here are using Basa (or some equally mushy white fish). Oh yeah, I forgot about Lake Taco. They are sometimes out of the Mahi Mahi but it is the best around (IMO) when they do have it.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
I tried them at Adelitas this past week end...seemed OK to start but then had bad oily taste in my mouth, maybe stale oil?
Also less attentive waiters? (or should I say Prepa Kids pin money) did not help. The waiter came back at the end of the meal and inquired was everything OK...hell no, 3-4 tables occupied

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Just had the same poor wait staff experience a couple of days ago at Adelita's.
Waiter disappeared after taking the order. Too busy chatting up the hostess.
They've lost me as a customer.

Oh and to get back on topic Lake Taco would get my vote.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Charlotte's next to Tio Sams on the Libramiento offers good Mahi Mahi fish and chips. Lori, the owner, used to work at Lake Taco and some of the items on the menu are similar. Food is good and they are open late most evenings.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Lake Taco is decent, but only their Dorado type. I guess (?) their new place Charlotte's by Tio Sam's for the Dorado version is the same.
Definitely NOT the Brewhouse for its mushy basa shit version. Don't know if Adelita's sources from same place as Brewhouse...seems likely...I'm unwilling to find out.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
If he is a Brit, then no such animal exists in this area. Cod, Haddock, and Plaice are the only acceptable fish for chippers in Ireland, and the UK is about the same.
I suppose Dorado (Mahi Mahi) would be the best you could find locally but it is a far cry from what he would expect.
Basa....bottom of the barrel, Tilapia, Blanco de Nilo, not much better.

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
Got to agree with slainte. Cod or haddock just doesnt exist for fish n chips here. Difficult to find a good chippie in uk these days.
Best locally was some beer battered cod sold frozen at superlake.even then was a poor substitute.maybe it was missing newspaper wrapping.those were the days.

how can you forget that or the mutton with the mint sauce or the rosbeef on Sunday with Yorkshire pudding or the Scotch eggs , the cucumber sandwich and scones for tea etc..... after a year in England I moved to a Pakistani area and lived with Pakistanis where I learn how to cook and had wonderful food all year.. people at school always complained I smelled of curry but at least I had great food!

Re: FISH AND CHIPS
The Poutine place, across from Superlake often comes up for fish and chips. Never tried it myself. They have gravy too, if you like it on your chips.
Brigitte - have you ever read that book "100 yard Journey" by Richard C. Morais? It is the story of a Pakistani family who are forced to leave Mumbai and relocate to a beautiful village in France - only 100 yards away from a Michelin starred restaurant. The son of the Pakistani has an extraordinarily gifted palate, which enrages the owner of French restaurant. It is a story about food though. It is if you can taste the wonderful dishes they describe in their little "war".

Oooh, thanks for the recommendation, sounds like a book I'd like too.

I have not read the book but I have seen the movie.. I never knew any Pakistani in France, only in England..Books are usually better than movies. The movie was cute but it was a fluff.

You are right, Brigitte, I've seen the movie too.
Amazon doesn't appear to have the book.

Fonda Marceva, Abasolo 455, a few blocks south of Plaza de Armas. I have honestly considered driving to Morelia for lunch.
