Re: new fish and chips place?
Have not tried it yet. I have to go to Perry's at least once a week to reestablish a base line.
I can state, without fear of criticism, that the fish and chips at Monte Cristo are best to be ignored.
And the beat goes on

"Perry's" reads very yummy. Does anyone know what kind of fish he uses ? Is it fresh or frozen ? I am not adverse to frozen fish, just has to be good fish, frozen and dethawed properly. I hope it isn't "basa".

Agreed. You just can't get good fish and chips here. Warm water fish just don't cut it, but I've found that Jeff at Magaña does a pretty decent job with dorado.

Don't bother. Tilapia is awful for making fish and chips.

yes it is. this love in with perry is starting to remind me of the love fest with the sausage guy who's sausage was crap but everybody "loved" it until he turned out to be a con man which had nothing to do with his inferior sausage making skills nor the goofs that thought it was good.casi nada wrote:borderreiver wrote:"Perry's" reads very yummy. has he gone back to using dorado? because that was good enough, indeed. last time i went he used an unknown fish[not dorado]so we have not been back since. plus he no longer has outside tables{?} and inside was too hot.casi nada wrote:twelveoaks wrote:Pedro wrote:across from superlake. anybody try it yet?

It seems there is a cadre of people here that are so hungry for NOB food ( pizza, hamburgers, fish n' chips) that they are willing to make huge allowances for average to poor food and post their reviews with such hyperbole that when I go there I wonder if I am in the wrong place. This follows a predictable course. First the raves and then reality sets in. Reddy's sandwiches comes to mind.

Re: new fish and chips place?
Dorado aka Mahi Mahi makes for the best fish and chips around here, IMO. It's about the closest to Halibut or Cod.
Re: new fish and chips place?
I agree, CBob. Dorado is probably the best we are going to do for fish and chips around here.

Unless we can find a place that has access to Halibut or Cod. I would think that some seafood suppliers in Guadalajara must have some. Price may be the deterrent though.

Have eaten enough fish and chips around Ireland and the UK to sink a battleship, but I've never seen halibut used by the chippers.
Cod is in short supply because of over fishing, so it's not available a lot of time, and the substitutes are haddock, plaice, and whiting in that order. None of those fish are readily available around here, and if they were, they would be so expensive you would want to mount them and place them on the wall.
An order of cod fish and chips in Dublin costs anywhere from 6 to 10 euros, depending on the "quality" (ambiance) of the eatery (some are strictly take away) or restaurant, or 100 to 180 pesos in our local currency.
The EU has placed catch limits on cod, so it depends on when the limit is reached and how long they are in place before the cod is available.
The Japanese and Russians don't always abide by those EU regulations.
In short, fish and chips here in Mexico is pure "caca". but we have to live with what we got.
An order of cod, Irish (potatos) chips, and pint of draught Guinness from the tap......PURE HEAVEN!!!

Re: new fish and chips place?
No doubt. I don't think they catch halibut anywhere near the UK. Halibut fish & chips are readily available on the west coast on this continent. At least from Alaska down to California and all parts in between. It ain't cheap though.
Re: new fish and chips place?
Having just got back from a tour of the British Isles, I did avail myself of fish and chips as much as possible, most places did have cod, but haddock was substituted in a few places. As to the Guinness, you are absolutely right.....paradise!!!

That's what I figured....it is a Canadian thing, or more specifically, a Canadian west coast thing.
Halibut is a fine fish, but not used for fish and chips across the Atlantic, or much seen at all, at least in the pubs where I hang out.

The closer you get to the muddy, black water of the Liffy, the better the Guinness.
There's an old saying....."Guinness doesn't travel well".

Re: new fish and chips place?
According to my conversations with Perry he buys farm-raised fish from a local market. It is the best I have ever had.

Re: new fish and chips place?
wrong. there is an atlantic halibut and that's what i had in the 4 best places i ate fish and chips in tranna. the place on the kingsway is still there and my mother and i went there about 6 years ago. she used to pick it up on her way home from work when i was in highschool. my favourite place as an adult was across from the don gaol and i took it home wrapped up in newspaper. the walls of that place were solid grease-yum! the couple that owned it were from halifax.slainte39 wrote:CanuckBob wrote:No doubt. Yes, Barbie, Perry told us the same thing. I have not yet tried his fish and chips, but will one of these days. His place seems to have gotten the most votes for best fish and chips in these parts.

Are you seriously saying that Perry's Fish and Chips are the best you've ever had. Really?
