Looking for someone who can work on my Grandmother Clock Empty Looking for someone who can work on my Grandmother Clock

Post by Sherman Mon Jul 03, 2017 5:22 pm

There were 3 people lakeside who could work on a grandmother or grandfather clock .....
one died
one went back north
and the 3rd who is lakeside, I've now set up what appears to be 'fake' appointments,
so I'm looking for someone else.

I'm happy to pay for a reliable person to come from Guad. The key word is 'reliable".
The clock needs to be cleaned and adjusted. It was working fine and does not appear to need repair.

Any leads .... ???
You can post here or send me PM.

thanks!

There is one in Jocotepec, Calle Degollado. It is not far from the plaza. If you follow Calle Allende and then turn left into Calle Degallado (not by car pls - one way street). Then on the right side. You have to pass some shops. The best is you ask there, because he is the last old watchmaker here lakeside. The shop, I believe, is only open from 11.00 to 2pm.

Does anyone in the shop speak English?  If not, they will have to put up with my less than perfect Spanish?

When you call just say.....Disculpame, habla ingles? You will either get a "si" and you can proceed from there or a "no" and get someone to help you.
Jocotepec sounds like a closer solution if he can do the job. I'm sure this person I recommended can.

There is a watch repair guy on the corner of Colon and 16 de Septiembre in Ajijic. He may be able to work on it.

He's good, too. Ignore the clutter. He also has some really nice silver jewelry on sale there, and every watch battery you can think of.

Looking for someone who can work on my Grandmother Clock Empty Visiting the clock shop in Guad

I tried the person in Ajijic ... lots of problems in getting appointments and him keeping appointments, so I give up. I'm going to Guad this week and will visit the clock shop. In person, I can manage my Espanol much better! If successful ... and that they will send someone lakeside, I'll post a note in case anyone else needs this service.

Thanks .... S.

HERE'S WHAT APPEARS TO BE CURRENT ...... 7/21/2017
Relojeria Omega
Jose Gomez Martinez, Technical Expert
Pedro Loza No. 315 S.H
Guadalajara
Tel 3614 2665
josegmzomega1@yahoo.com.mx

NO ENGLISH Spoken
Fortunately there was a bilingual customer, plus I had photos of my clock, repair work needed, etc.

Yesterday, I went to the address given above for Relojeria Omega ... with my GPS, I did not find a clock/watch shop at that Juatez address. But, I understand from Senior Gomez that there is a business in that area called Relojeria Timex and that is operated by Senior Fuentes. To find the new location of Relojeria Omega, I used the name of the company only for the GPS, excluding the Juarez address.

Mr. Gomez will come lakeside to pick up/work on grandmother/grandfather clocks, bring the workings to his shop for repair, etc.
For my situation, he is charging $7500mx which is more than I've ever paid in the 45 years I've had the clock ... but what else to do? Not much since I want the clock repaired/serviced.

I know of one on Calle Pavo in Guadalajara-south of the historic center. An old established business that guarantees their work. If you want the details I can give them to you. I doubt if they would travel out here.

At this point I agree.  He would not even keep an appointment.

Jose Gomez, the Technical guy from Omega is coming this morning to pick up the clock works.
Since I was in the shop in Guad, I'm pretty comfortable this was a good choice.  I've been in many clock shops in the US and this has all the appearances of a 'real' clock shop.  Mr. Gomez does not speak any English, but we had one person who helped translate.  I had photos and Mr. Gomez seemed to ask all the right questions.

If this does not work out in the end, I will post the results so that there will be some feedback.

They resolved and repaired a complicated problem on a special pendulum clock for me that none of the local guys could figure out.
Seemed to have much more expertise.

Looking for someone who can work on my Grandmother Clock Empty Relojeria Omega

For Relojeria Omega / Jose Gomez

See my posting above for contact information. I don't have information on Relojeria Timex, which might be the business to which Cypress is referring on Calle Pavo????

I have a 45 year old Trend grandmother clock that needed servicing.
Mr. Gomez picked it up this morning ..... as I mentioned, he appears to have a legitimate clock/watch business in Guad which I saw when I visited the shop.
This morning, he started working to remove the clock works .... starting with the weights.

I was taught never to touch the weights with your hands because the oils in your hands left blotches/prints. And, that's where he started ..... hands all over the weights with no cloth or protection for the weights. So, I got cloths to wrap around the weights and a box in which to put them .... because he brought nothing.

I have had the clock serviced several times over the 45 years and only the 'works' were removed for serving/repair and then to keep in the shop for a month.
In this case, he removed the works and the face which were wrapped in two large garbage bags that I provided because the technician had nothing with him. The clock works have now been taken to Guad for a month, which is typical time for them to have the clock to ensure it is working properly.

Getting services done in this country I find to be a daily challenge in general and stressful for pieces of furniture to which there is some attachment!!

I dealt with Sr. Fuentes at Omega back then.  It seems he has left and started his own shop elsewhere.  I will check it out when I have time.

Do you have a name of the owner or technician? Mr. Gomez only mentioned to me Relojeria Timex where Mr. Fuentas was located.

I really hope someone has a name of someone who can do repairs on a mantel clock. I have one in need of repair, it needs a new spring. The clock is about 67 years old, I miss its' chimes and the tick-tock was very calming.

3 references are mentioned above, 2 with addresses.
If you are really interested in getting your clocked worked on, I'd go to Guad (if you don't speak Spanish, bring someone with you). Bring the clock or photos of it inside and out and go visit these places to see what they have there and for them to see your clock. You may be able to leave your clock at the time if you are comfortable.

Mr. Gomez, who took my grandmother clockworks, I expect will do a good job on the workings of the clock. In the US, someone would have come to the house with soft gloves to remove the weights from the clock and put them in a box they brought to carry the weights back to the shop. I've been here 10 years and I don't see that kind of planning or attention to anything ... not part of the reality here. For me, it was a choice of getting the clock running again or letting it sit as a decoration ... and I did not want to do that.

Good luck.

Omega is located just south of the historic district also ... he charged me $500mx for a transportation. He was here at 9:00 am and scheduled the 'drop off' in August for 9:00 am. He did not hesitate to come lakeside.
