Which place are you asking about? Atlas or in Chapala?

Lakeside has Chula Vista Country Club, a nine-hole "executive" course. It think it costs about $450 Pesos plus caddie fee. East of Chapala is Chapala Country Club, a nine-hole course that is pretty wide open. It costs about $450 Pesos + caddie fee.

The real golf courses are in Guadalajara and are all private. Although you can play as a guest of a member. Clubs such as El Cielo, Santa Anita and Atlas will cost about $1500 Pesos for golf and cart + caddie fee. North of Guadalajara on the hwy to Tequila is El Rio, a Jack Nicklaus Signature course. It's private too but you can play there once per month for $1400 Pesos + caddie tip.

Wow....and I thought is was all the drug lords making all the money in Mexico. Looks like a golf course is also a printing press.

In Mexico, Golf is a sport for the rich and gringos on vacation. There are no public courses, no municipal course. The rates at the coastal resort areas are $175-300.

A lot of people from the Lakeside area have joined the Atlas GCC, it is not far from Chapala on the way to the Airport, you mite want to google them for the rates. If you want to join the Guadalajara Golf & Country Club, the buy in alone is 250,000.00 US, and there is a aprox 5 yr waiting period.

I'm a member at Atlas. Beautiful 18 hole course and fabulous facilities, bars, restaurants, workout facility and services. Initiation for a senior couple is about $4000 US, monthly fees are $3700 pesos. PM if you want more info. BTW, Guadalajara CC is now $400,000US!

The last time I golfed regularly, it was about $2.00 per hole, or $36.00 per round.

When the price started going higher, I stopped playing.

Good thing, eh? lol!

My wife & I spent 2 weeks driving thru central BC visiting all those small town courses... several 9 hole courses were $20 bucks or so... in the heart of a couple of different mountain ranges...

If golf wuz what you were looking for, you'd be hard pressed ta beat Beautiful British Colombia for value ;)

Back at Lakeside... Chula Vista is a very nice course... you'll definitely get your exercise climbing some of those hills... but very nice...

If you happen to be that fella living along side the 4th... sorry about that window!!

Post by BILLBOGEY Sun Jan 23, 2011 10:47 am

I am coming to Ajijic for 2 weeks, Feb 12-26, to see if I would like to move in the Lake Chapala area. I am divorced with no kids so I am very able to move. I am an avid golfer, work part time at the Forest Park Golf course in St. Louis MO. It is 27 holes, I work with the carts and setting up the various tournaments/events. We have 110 electric carts and 20 gas carts to take care of, so we keep busy.
I have read about the courses in Lake Chapala, Atlas is too expensive, I got spoiled playing free golf. I am not sure I want to bring my clubs with me, will have to pay an extra $30 for bag fee plus I don't have a good travel golf bag. Is it possible to rent clubs there and at what cost? Are pull carts available or are caddies required?
I would appreciate any advice and help you can provide.

Thank you, Bill

Caddies are required at both Chapala CC and Chula Vista CC. I don't know about rental clubs at either. Atlas has rental clubs, caddy req'd for non-members.

Bob and David, Thanks for your responses. I guess I need to decide how bad I want to play golf on my visit. At least I could see the courses.

Cost to join Chapala CC: $6000US (9 holes)
One restaurant open for lunch everyday, dinner 2 nights/wk

Cost to join Atlas CC: ~$4500US (18 holes)
Two restaurants open for bkfst, lunch, and dinner 7days, 6 nights.
Two snack bars w/ full bar open everyday.
Locker room includes, bar, whirlpool, steam, and sauna.
Doctor on-duty everyday. Barbershop 3 days/wk

Atlas is a private club. Bob's info above incorrectly states "semi-private."

BillBogey, you didn't know Lou Feldmann who used to play at Forest Park frequently, did you? He died a while back but loved his golf.

I started working at Forest park in 2006. There is a group of old timers, I am a younger guy here, that play 9 holes every weekday, usually Hawthorne course. I looked at a roster sheet from a few years back and did not see Lou Feldmann on it.

Golf course nere-do-wells are to life in Mexico as geraniums are to cheap store bought pots and eventually all these things reek of decay. Why is it that people who have nothing substantial to communicate end up farting puss-brained thoughts among morons.

Why must we pick our noses to find substances that provoke thought.

Thanks very much David. I will send you a PM when I get closer to my trip and decide to bring clubs or I think I could rent clubs there. Bill,
PS: When I started working at the golf course there were 2 Bill's doing carts. To avoid confusion, I asked my name tag read BILLPAR. Since they knew my golf skills, after the boss stopped laughing, he suggested BILL2BOGEY, we compromised on BILLBOGEY, which is much more honest.

Hi, I got here Feb 12 and just figured out how to get on this web site again.
I had a wonderful round of golf at Atlas last week thanks to David. I am looking for someone who would be willing to let me join them for a round at Chapla CC and the Chula Vista course in Ajijic, across from the Hole in One range.

I am leaving next Sat so am available this Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri to play.
I have met some wonderful people here and am giving strong consideration about moving.
Again, thanks for your kindness, Bill

Glad you are enjoying it Bill. It is a great place. I think our member "Intercasa" is putting together some sort of golf gathering next week.

Be sure to post all your observations of what you thought when you get back home.

Thanks Bob,
I got lost again today. Bus driver did not know where I wanted to get off, ended up in Joctepec. The guy at bus station said my street was 2 blocks a way. OOPS, kind of same name. Walked back towards main road, waved for bus and it was the same driver. Eventually got where I wanted over an hour late., on Vincente Guerro.
I will watch for replies here. I am staying at the Adobe Wells Inn on 16 de Septembre in Ajijic. Phone 766-1296.
Thanks, Bill Ronecker
