One way tickets
There is an ongoing topic on Michoacan.Net about being unable to purchase one way tickets into Mexico. One must have an exit ticket if one is a tourist. I'll be flying in this month but I might be taking a ride back. I certainly don't want to purchase a round trip ticket. My flight is San Antonio-GDL. Can anyone shed light on this?

I cannot think that any person can believe that they have the right to enter any country as a visitor without providing proof that they have the means to leave when their visitor visa expires

Re: One way tickets
As I mentioned above. I might get a ride back or I might just take the bus. Either way how do give proof of that?

That is your problem not Mexico's. That is the law in many countries.
Would you let someone in your house without knowing they had a way to get home?

Re: One way tickets
So the link Lunateak posted above was no help to you at all?
"Luckily there are a few easy (and legal) ways to get around this proof-of-onward-travel requirement, so you can travel on a one-way ticket, and not be forced to pre-plan your entire trip down to the last detail."

Re: One way tickets
Since my daughter works for the airlines, I fly on one way tickets (crew passes) regularly between here and the US and Canada. Never had a problem.

You are both Canadian and RP here in Mexico, one way tickets no problem . I cannot think why the USA lets in an old bald guy like you.

Re: One way tickets
Never had a problem flying into the US either. They only ask how long and where I am staying. Do customs agents know if you have a return ticket or not?

Immigration can and will ask for it but you are traveling on a crew pass so they expect you to leave. You are not a "Tourist."

Copa airline (Panama) will not sell a one-way to Mexico unless the person has a temporal or permanent card.
I know this personally.

That argument doesn't hold water. If I go by bus I don't have to provide a return ticket. Or I can fly and cheat by using one of those enabling services that charge 9.99dls. I just wanted to hear other's experiences and not to make an argument on the merits of the law.

Re: One way tickets
Most of the people on this board are either Temporary of Permanent Residents here. the rules are different for them than they are for tourists. I would expect that by driving a car a person has a means to return at the end of his visa. I cannot comment on the bus but Immigration can I am sure ask for return or onward tickets.
The rule has been in effect in many countries for many years so it should be no surprise that Mexico is enforcing it. It is just easier to enforce when arriving my air.

Re: One way tickets
How and/or where do they enforce it? I am not asked anything about my residency when I purchase a one way ticket anywhere. Sure they could refuse entry and turn you around but not likely unless they had pretty solids grounds that you are a risk.

As I said, I don't want to argue the merits of the law, I just want to hear other people's experience.

Re: One way tickets
Maybe it is not a law; just airline policy, since they get stuck flying you back out in the event that you are refused entry. Nada mas.

Re: One way tickets
As DaveP said, most of the people who post on this board are Temporary or Permanent residents. Of people who come here on tourist visas most will have a return ticket. You are unlikely to get personal experiences here. Hopefully, you will share here whatever answers you come up with so others may benefit. It appears there are several workarounds if that is what you want.

I have been asked many times for return documention (tickets) when going through immigration entering a country. The airlinbe are just being smart ir they ask you to confirm your return before you buy a ticket.
Having lived for lived in a border town for many yeaars and having known other people in border towns I have heard of many instances where travelers have been turned back at a border for one reason or another. A passport does not guarantee you entry to any country if the immigration officer does not like you face.

Re: One way tickets
I often purchase I way tickets, as I fly business and there is no price advantage of buy round trip. When flying south usually from Seattle, and sometimes from Vancouver I have never had a problem. Yes I had an Fm 3 and now a Residente Permanente card.

Re: One way tickets
I flew here on a one way ticket with a tourist visa when I moved here before applying for resident status. I had no problems.

I am tourist, flying Calif to GDL & San Antonio TX-GDL for past 3 years. I have never been asked for return documentation. Interjet, Volaris, Aeromexico, Delta, phucking United, Southwest (PVR) - always 1 way tickets. Sometimes I buy return at the same time, if a sale is happening. But lots of times just waited till 2 weeks before I'm ready to go. (But NOT in June however...) Pretty sure Mex immigration keeps entry/exit history by passport #. I KNOW the US does..

Re: One way tickets
For those people that have dual or multiple citizenships, and you are flying between those countries, no problem. When I go to Ireland I show them my Irish passport and returning here, my Mexican passport. Often buy one way tickets as I'm not sure of how long I will stay.
Most of my family members have Mexican/US passports and they use the same method when travelling to the US.
Not that it will help in most cases, but a least a solution for that limited use

Re: One way tickets
When I suffered a burst appendix my ex husband flew down to help me after the surgery to save my life. They refused to sell him a one way ticket even though he explained he didn't know when I would be well enough for him to return. He had to purchase the return ticket and we were forced to extend the date for another fee when I needed him longer than expected. There was no explanation and in his luggage was medical supplies urgently needed for my recovery. It took another surgery and his return again, but I'm still here and as strong as ever.
