Be sure to carry proper ID
I just heard from someone that on a recent bus trip to Morelia the bus was pulled over by IMN at a toll booth and everyone was asked for their tourist/residency visa, passport and/or Mexican ID.
Maybe Mexico is rounding up the illegals..........

We've always needed to carry our papers when travelling, nothing new. Most foreigners think that's only necessary if traveling internationally, not true, domestically as well.

Maybe not new, however I have never seen or heard of IMN pulling over tourist buses (or anybody for that matter) in my time here.

On the way out of Chiapas we were stopped on a regular basis on the way to Oaxaca or in Tabasco and Vera Cruz but never around Morelia and I never was asked for my papers. Dark skin people yes but not white skin people, sounds like there is a change in the policies. One day the Immigration got on board and took pictures of everyone but only asked papers from darker looking people . I guess things are changing..

I was present at that incident. The authorities were very professional. They want to see ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS - no copies. Everybody got to take a picture with the sniffer dog.

Looks like Mexico is playing tit for tat for Trump enforcing immigration law. If I was him I'd do the same.

INM has always required that you carry your visa at all times, and random checks of bus passengers is nothing new; especially on northbound bus routes.

Re: Be sure to carry proper ID
Everyone carried on with their journey after the lecture even the lady with nada. Once back on the road she had her meltdown. She thought for sure she would be detained. At the end of the day gringos = $. Still, just comply.

When on the Yucatan at least 20 years ago we were stopped and asked for papers, nothing new. The rest of the world is used to having their "papers" with them at all times. Sometimes they get a little lazy and do not bother.

Re: Be sure to carry proper ID
I think some of it may be because they are enforcing the US border more. Illegals from SOB cross through MX and are bunching up on the US/MX border unable to get across. MX is not very happy about that.
I saw a news story that said the cost for a coyote to cross had doubled from $4000US to $8000US recently.

Re: Be sure to carry proper ID
Just got back from Chiapas and was not stopped once at any of the checks.... so it is a hit and miss...sometimes I get stopped 3 or 4 times going north and sometimes I just sail through..
I had to go to the Guatemalan border and realized when I got there I did not have my driver's license, I has my ID but no driver's license..I decided to go back. and was nervous as there are 4 checks on the way back to San Cristobal.. I was not stopped once that time either and I was with a young indigenous which usually attracts attention..this time nothing..
