Price Increases
In Chicago, gasoline has increased 20%,owing the the usual lame excuse. Tortillas seem not to have risen. A friend says the price of tortillas has risen quite a bit this new year. Has tortilla risen much "Lakeside"?

Re: Price Increases
And that is a joke. A 20% fuel increase would amount to maybe a 2% or 3% increase on transport costs of consumer goods. The protests should be against companies that haphazardly raise their prices like this. Fuel in Canada and the US increases or decreases 20% on a regular basis. The Mexican businesses (protesters??) needs to get their heads out of their asses on this one IMO.

.......And they can here too after the free market (de-regulation) goes into effect (March 1st??). I think these protesters are pissed off at a whole lot more than just this fuel price increase.

Many people think the outgoing government is looking to pad their bank accounts prior to leaving office.
When tortillas go up, so does almost everything else.

It will depend on how far the "employees" have to commute and whether, or not, they eat tortillas.

LOL. As far as I guess, that is one area where it's strictly a supply and demand business when it comes to costs. And I believe it has always been an area for bargaining.
It's pretty simple; a worker would like to make $500 per hour but business is slow and there is competition, so if someone offers $300 for an hour, they may very well take it.The reasoning is simply math: At the end of the day/shift,what is more income, $350.00 or $0.00?
Even I ain't that clueless; it's business. BTW, looked up the laws on that profession, interesting. From what I read, not illegal to do but illegal to have a house or solicit. Guess it's encouraging independent businesses.

Re: Price Increases
Since a lot of the corn sold here is imported from the US it should go up hence the price of tortilla should go up to.. and that always is a problem..

Most MASECA comes from Central Illinois. Supposedly only non-GMO corn is allowed into Mexico!

Re: Price Increases
So what's wrong with GMO? Do the benefits outweigh any risks?
Here is a very good explanation from Scientific American on the subject, and it's pretty objective.

I am looking at the economic impact of GMOs on the poor farmers not whether the stuff is safe or not.

I suggest you convince them to get better yields on their milpas by utilizing science.

If you think that they are upset now, wait until they (USA) starts to charge for us to send money back to Mexico.CanuckBob wrote:.......And they can here too after the free market (de-regulation) goes into effect (March 1st??). Another boondoggle. How are you going to tax it? I currently send money to Mexico via a transfer on the internet. The money I send comes from my bank electronically, goes to a European based company who then transfers it to where every I want after they calculate the exchange rate and take their fee. As long as the transactions are under 10K USD, nothing gets reported. Trying to get transfer companies not based in the US to comply would be tied up in courts for years.
Yeah, maybe they could force a few US based wire services to add a fee, but the internet is a beautiful thing. Once a fee was imposed and collected, people would find a new route. And there would be a huge learning curve in how to do it. This whole notion of restricting individuals from sending cash to Mexico and being taxed to do so is more chest thumping that anything. Not well thought out and a scare tactic at best. Should it happen to mainstream methods, I'd be happy to turn on my friends on how to send cash home with a better, easier and cheaper method. This fee idea would just create new industry.

Re: Price Increases
I would be more concerned that the NAFTA agreement is cancelled and huge tariff's are applied to Mexican exports into the US. This would be far, far more devastating to the overall Mexican economy than blocking or taxing remittances, and more likely to actually happen.

That has nothing to do with fuel prices but everything to do with the locals wanting to cash in on the massive increase in the US Dollar.
Not only restaurants but house rental etc. and more.
It will only get worse.

RichardD More and bigger is not necessarily better, it depends what you want to achieve.
I ran a vineyard where we wanted to lower the yields in favor of quality.. There is more than yield and higher yield in agriculture
The traditional milpas are some of the best way to cultivate land, no need for crop rotation or lots of fertilizers. It mimics nature and feed whole families, a field of GMO s cannot do that.

Re: Price Increases
And if/when the USD swings the other way they won't likely lower prices.
