Policia ATV's

I see the Policia bombing around down at the water front with some new ATV's. Nice to see them out patrolling more.

Why?  What exactly do they do?  You can't call them if you're burgled or they'll come in and finish the job from what I hear. I realize you have to report crimes to MP.

Correct, Policia are here to stop crimes that are about to happen or those in progress. They don't investigate crimes or take reports. That is what the MP does. The MP will direct the policia when/if necessary.

Similar in some places in the US. I was burglarized, tools and materials stolen, $2000 USD value. Police wouldn't even respond when I called, they told me to go online, fill out a report and use that to file an insurance claim. The police never called, came to the house, ZERO. Similar situations with a house a few doors down and their domestic disputes that flow out into the streets, the police won't dispatch a car unless there is physical violence. As long as they are just screaming, the police don't respond.

Its my understanding they got some new small motorcycles also.

Not similar at all. Here the job of POLICIA is crime prevention. Period. You don't call them after a crime has been committed because there's nothing for them to do. In the USA they are the data takers at accident scenes and home burglaries, etc. In areas where break-ins are common it's more cost efficient to have the victim fill out a form online than to have an officer write it all down by hand.

Correct nothing to do with the US. The MP is part of the State system and Federal system and the police is municipal. The Municipal police is  for crime prevention  after a crime is commited you have to go to the Ministerio Publico which is a Federal agency and they have their own investigative police. They are part of the Justice department and many of the people working there are lawyers. They are the one who haveto write the reports the judge will see when or if the criminals are caught.
In Mexico   we are all innocent until found guilty  now..

The Municipal police has new ATVs for the tourist police and motos   which they clean up every morning ..the water stays in the patio and breeds mosquitoes, I would have given anything if I could have used the water used for the moto to flush the toilet in the cell..
There are some old motos as well. I do not know if those work..they looked in pretty bad shape but the red motos and ATV. look brand new and are well kept from what I saw.

The police brings in the drunks and druggies, the people caught in the act, people involved in family disputes and brawls etc..they have plenty to do..the dispatch women in the office work 12 h shift and the phone rings non stop.
I did not catch all the things they were doing since they speak in code but there were enough infractions and crime in progress being reported to keep everyone busy.
One was interesting because there was something in progress in a street that no one could find. It had the name of a saint and they sent people looking in Riberas and in Chapala but no one could find that street so it is important to give good directions when you call the police, the street is not always enough..
