Beware - dog poisoning's
Someone told me this morning that a few dogs have been poisoned at the Ajijic malecon. Please be aware of this.

Re: Beware - dog poisoning's
The latest, according to TOB, was off the end of Revolution near the beach this morning. Dog died within 20 minutes of eating. Took this from TOB:
"To that end I would like those who are dog owners, and especially those who have been victims, to come to the Ajijic Malecón (the amphitheater) this Wednesday 19th at 6:30 pm. I will do my best to get the authorities to come, but something has to be done as quickly as possible. The horrible death that my dog had to endure should not happen to any living being; our canine friends deserve better from the human race. Please spread the word. Those who have been victims should contact Rafael Aguilar, Director of Ecología, at 331-216-5892. "

Re: Beware - dog poisoning's
Hopefully the authorities will also take the time to remind everyone of the Jalisco leash laws. Sounds like a few of these poor dogs might still be alive if their owners didn't let them run around on the malecon. I often wonder why the policia aren't hanging out down there to hand out tickets and maybe collect a little mordida.
Strangely enough, I have never seen people with packs of unleashed dogs running around on the Chapala malecon.

Dogs are like toddlers...as much as you'd love to watch their every movement (even a dog on a leash) sometimes things happen so quickly that you can't intervene quickly enough.

Re: Beware - dog poisoning's
Tis true however in this recent bout I haven't heard of one on a leash getting poisoned. I guess my point here was that this may be the act of some unstable individual who is sick of having unleashed dogs running around them. It certainly doesn't justify the situation however I am not surprised that someone has done this. I have heard the same thing happening to dogs that bark all night where somebody throws poison in the yard.

How many entitled gringos walk their dogs unleashed on the Chapala Malecon as compared to those who do so on the Ajijic Malecon?
Handing out tickets might be a win-win.
Just as an aside; Went to the Ajijic Plaza last week and noticed at least 10 street dogs hanging out on the Plaza near the butcher shop. I was there again today and saw 3.

The dogs at the butcher shop are sort of a tradition. They line up in order in which they are fed. They are polite and are a daily thing. Most of the dogs running around Ajijic go home at night to their owners. Unfortunately, they will easily be victims of this poisoner.

I don't think there are many unleashed dogs on the Chapala malecon. It seems to be an Ajijic thing. It isn't just Gringo's either. I see lots of Mexican's doing it too. I also noticed the reduction in dog's around the butcher shop and wondered the same thing.

Re: Beware - dog poisoning's
I saw that someone on TOB has been posting that the Jalisco law states that a dog must have a leash OR a collar when out in public. That is total BS.
The Jalisco law clearly states: It is forbidden to travel with pets in public places that are not controlled by a collar and leash or other means to ensure the safety of passersby and property.
Here is the Jalisco law. Check out article #23.

Maybe someone can enlighten these people.

For some people, laws are only a "suggestion" and are superceded by their own wishes.
The leash law is for the protection of the animal and others. Has anyone heard of a short-leashed dog being poisoned this year?

Theyposted that there was a sign by the Ajijic malecon that said "a collar &/or leash". Obviously the law is better than the sign.CanuckBob wrote:I saw that someone on TOB has been posting that the Jalisco law states that a dog must have a leash OR a collar when out in public. That is total BS.

This is what was posted. Take a look at the last sentence where they are saying "the law".

I do not understand your reasoning here....on one hand you say "The State of Jalisco leash law is posted on the malecon. It very clearly states in Spanish and English the dog must have a collar and/or a leash"
on the other hand you state "For 3 years at the malecon, I have been walking, without incident, a very high energy dog that needs to be off-leash. His energy is admired by all."
So its ok for your dog to be running off leash even though it is in contravention of the bylaw? Perhaps all those other people who let their dogs run off leash feel the same way.
The law simply reads that you must have either a collar or a leash for your dog but if you choose you are allowed to have both. My dog always has a collar.

Here is the relevant section of the law, translated into English:
"Article 23.- It is forbidden to travel with pets in public places that are not
controlled by a collar and leash or other means to ensure the safety of
passersby and property"
That's about as clear as it gets, is it not?
How about taking a "high energy" dog to the dog park to work off steam? It's on the back road going into La Floresta. Clean, well run......but OMG, they CHARGE a little bit to use it since somebody has to pick up poop, etc. I think the people who can afford to feed a pet and pay vet bills............should be able to handle the charge.

Or at the very least take it down on the beach away from all the people who are trying to enjoy their stroll on the malecon. Don't even get me started on these idiots who have 4 or 5 unleashed, out of control dogs running around on there.

And along with that, when you feel like resting on a bench and somebody's huge, unleashed dog comes bounding over to you with the owner exclaiming "Oh he's just being friendly". Aargh!

Being a vet you would think Memo would be more responsible with his dogs. I haven't seen Taco in a couple of weeks so hopefully Memo is just keeping him at home.

Since we drive past the butcher shop almost daily, the dog lineup is pretty obvious. A couple of weeks ago, traffic was stalled at that point and I was remarking that there was a full dozen dogs waiting for their handout. Then, last week, the number was down to four. Yesterday, it was up to six, but they looked like a different bunch. That's not a safe place.

"that's not a safe place"
Especially with all those cars that turn left off of Guadalupe Victoria onto Marcos Castellanos, going the wrong way to get to Parroquia.
It does stall traffic.
If you are coming up M. C., and you see someone waiting at G. V. to make an illegal turn southbound, signal a right turn onto G. V. and say you have as much right to go the wrong way as they do.
I did it for 5 minutes but then it got boring.

I was just in Memo's shop and all his dogs, including Taco, are OK.
