Do you Carry Homeowner's Insurance?
Do you carry Homeowner's Insurance? If so, do you have Earthquake Coverage with it, meaning that if you get ANY damage from a quake or mudslide, you would be covered?
If you have Homeowner's have you had to use it and what kind of success did you have with your claim?

Yes, I have homeowners on two houses. Yes have coverage for earthquake. Never had to make a claim. I understand it is a hassle and that you have to report it to Minesterio publico if it is robbery. Edgar advised to photo everything. Have been meaning to do that - need to get to it.

Well, we carry homeowner´s insurance in both Ajijic and San Cristóbal de Las Casas. These cost us about $5,000 Pesos a year each give or take a few pesos. We insure through Jesus Tejeda at AXA but is it worth it? Probably not. We think we have earthquake insurance (said to be important in Chiapas) and flood insurance (certainly important in Ajijic) and theft and liability but is it really worth it? Maybe the liability coverage although I question its importance in Mexico.
Edgar advising you to photograph everthing is a joke as is Edgar´s idiotic advice. What does a photograph prove? I could go out and photo anybody´s stereo equipment plus what are you going to get on a two year old flat screenT.V. and a sound system? Pennies on the dollar. Where are all of your receipts and guarantees? That electronic crap has the residual value of a Louisana bayou after an oil spill.
I think I´ll go cancel all my homeowners´ insurance except minimal liability and, in the case of Chiapas, earthquake insurance although that is also probably a joke.

I have regular and earthquake. also covers is a lightening bolts fries your stuff, theft and liability. About $400US per year, a small price to pay to not shoulder a huge loss in the event of a disaster.

Yes, I do. Didn't when I first moved here but around 2001 there was an earthquake at the coast and felt here. I noticed a crack in my casita that wasn't there before. I figured it would cost me a fortune to rebuild if things really shook up. My policy, with Jesus/AXA covers earthquakes and problems caused by water. I'm more concerned with those than with someone stealing my computer or tv.

I´m with LaChula. Our homeowner´s insurance "covers "us for theft and that sort of thing but we are mainly concerned with liability and earthquake (Chiapas) and flooding (Lake Chapala). We have seriously alarmed both houses on fully monitored systems to discourage - quite effectively - burglary but it´s the big expense of rebuilding after a flood or an earthquake that concerns us. Probably a waste of money but, what the hell, the annual premiums are chump change.
