What do I need for Shaw?
Hi,
When I return from NOB I want to set up Shaw. I am in Canada (Toronto). So I can get what I need. Question is what exactly do I need?
Thanks,
Michael

Re: What do I need for Shaw?
You need a receiver and an antenna. If you want to record shows, you will need a Motorola 630. If not, then a straight HD model will suit you. You can usually buy these from third party providers which avoids the whole Mexico issue with Shaw. The antenna is a Shaw 75e elliptical dish. Then you will need an account. There are several ways of setting that up. PM me if you need to know. Also, CP Electronics in Guad sells the Shaw equipment and will also do the installation. You can check CP's prices here. No doubt other posters have other suggestions.

Since you are Canadian you should get your own subscription (assuming you will be keeping an address there). That way you don't have to rely on a black market third party provider. Shaw is under continuous pressure from the CRTC to not provide their signal out of country and IMO it is just a matter of time before these local providers have issues.

Make sure you have a Dual Quad LNB from Shaw and not the newer Triple xKu LNB. The third satellite is below the horizon here and you end up receiving only the low def channels. The Dual Quad LNBs are no longer manufactured so finding one might be difficult. We have the 75e elliptical dish (bought here) with the Dual LNB and the Shaw (Motorola) HDPVR 630. Works great!

ARRIS now makes the Shaw Receivers.
ARRIS now makes the Shaw Receivers. Motorola sold the business. New ARRIS Shaw receivers are almost identical.

XKU LNB works great here

This is just NOT correct. The Triple xku LNB works here. All HD and SD channels on Satellite F1 and F2 are received with the new xku lnb. But NO you will not get channels from the 3rd G1 satellite this far south. All receivers on the account must use the same type of LNB.
Call Shaw Direct to change the streaming (V Code) to all of your receivers. You don't have to upgrade the Dishes, just the LNB needs to change to XKU.

Hi BTDT,
I won't argue the point, you may well be correct, but our experience was as I indicated. We were in contact with Shaw at the time of installation, and the Gentleman who did the install was insistent that the issue was with the Triple LNB. We believed him. We installed a DUAL and have been happy ever since.
We did learn sometime later that the installer we used is known for making claims that seem to profit himself only. Water under the bridge.

Re: What do I need for Shaw?
I have an75 E Quad LNB down here and it works great. Why because although I could upgrade said LNB to pick up the additional frequencies from the 3rd satellite, I was told not to upgrade to the new software needed to do so.
Why? Because down here we are too far south to pick up the signal from this third satellite because the signal is so weak that using a 2.4 meter dish one can barely get the signal in the Sn Francisco Bay area.
Apparently should you down here download the software to upgrade your LNB to pick up signals from this satellite when it is impossible to do, you will have serious setup problems

Correct Shaw programming won't work right unless receiver is programmed with Correct LNB. If you have a dual LNB they must program it for that LNB. You cannot swap out one LNB for another without changing the configurations for your receiver. I know cause they programmed my box with the wrong LNB and all I got was very few stations mostly SD. I have been told we can use a triple down here but box must be configured for triple. Common Boo Boo these days. Both LNBs look alike somewhat so be warned. I have the Quad dual sat LNB and the 75e larger oval dish like everyone else for the most part. Only problems occur when uber cloudy to the south of us but that is too be expected.

And you can have multiple dishes with different LNB's on the same account. Shaw just has to configure each box accordingly.
