Camping
I was walking through Walmart and noticed some camping gear. Are there places the you can camp safely?

Re: Camping
Yes, there is a place over by Tala, which is to the north of us. And another place east of Mazamitla. Better during the week than on the weekends when the places are full of . . . people.

I'm thinking tent and a stove. A Bear Grikkz experience'. I'm just in the mood to take me and the dog for a fun hike or camp

. . .and the pot growers and crack labs when driving and hiking in the boonies. The beach would be safe.

Re: Camping
Tala is close to the pyramids. Here's a good book to get if you are serious about getting out and about: Outdoors in Western Mexico: Forty Scenic Places to Camp, Hike or Picnic Within a Few Hours of Guadalajara by John Pint.
And here's his page with articles he has written over the years about places to go close by: http://www.saudicaves.com/mx/

Re: Camping
La Laguna Santa Maria del Oro. Safe, clean lake to swim in, camping, kayaking, fishing. . .

Re: Camping
I second La Laguna Santa Maria del Oro. It's up by Tepic, toward the west of Guad.

Re: Camping
This will be a nice adventure for me and my dog. I'll write down all the suggested places and research them. This will be fun! Maybe I watch to much survival tv. In fact I know I watch to much survival tv!

Re: Camping
Be careful in Mexico or you won't survive. The cartel gangs are everywhere but you don't know where at any specific time or place. When I lived in the States I had to be careful of survivalists and gold miners who were very protective of their claim. Here it's even trickier. No going out in the boonies and just pitching a tent like in the US. Only established camp grounds with owners or caretakers around. Not as adventurous, but much safer.

Re: Camping
Thanks for the tip. Now I was just thinking of the two surfers who were shot coming to Guadalajara. Such a senseless tragedy. It does sound fun to pitch a tent anywhere but yeah. It's still lots to research. I'm gonna try my best to be safe. But if you want adventure you're gonna take risks. Thanks for the concern Gamina!

Re: Camping
I agree and some risks are calculated to be minimal. The surfers were taking a stupid risk to be out at night in a known cartel town and stronghold. No place in the world is perfectly safe, but some places are safer than others. Seek out those.

Re: Camping
Is this why at the gas station today they said they only had premium? I thought it was a hustle and pissed for hours.
Thanks for the articles. I'm researching places. Places that won't chop my head off. If all else fails I guess we'll camp in the back yard. Less bugs there than in the house anyway

haha
Check out the Huasteca Potosina. It's safe and so is Laguna Santa Maria del Oro.

Re: Camping
I'm sure if one Googles campground's in Jalisco there would be a few to ponder. Santa Maria del Oro is indeed a beautiful lake and area. Been there a couple of times. You can also rent some nice cabins near Mazamitla.
