If you are burying it in your yard, nobody cares. If you are burying it in the boonies, nobody cares.

Re: May a dog be legally buried in Mexico?
You need to apply for a burial permit and get a death certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian to do it legally.

There has to be an autopsy before the licensed vet can issue the death certificate. After the police investigate to make sure there was no foul play you can bury the dog.

The MP does the investigations for canine deaths. The police only investigate feline deaths.

The autopsies can only be done at forensics in Ocotlan. Expensive.

That's why most people just taxidermy their dogs and keep them in the living room.

I assume this is from some government agency; do you know which one? I guess I could ask at the Municipal Palace.
thanks.

Yes, ask at the MP. They will be happy to see you again. They really like you over there.

It must be buried within 24 hours or you have the extra expense of embalming....in a pet cemetery, or just do it at home when no one is looking.
Some cemeteries lack security from grave robbers.

Ask Stephen King about pet cemeteries.

Like I wrote--bury it in your backyard and no one will care. Unless you open up your mouth to the wrong people. Go to the boonies.

Spencer can help you with the paperwork and he'll know which agency to go to.Clueless wrote:viajero wrote:You need to apply for a burial permit and get a death certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian to do it legally.

One more thing ,if it's an American dog you must notify the US consulate.

I thought I'd read where a DNA test was required to determine whether the animal was related to any past or present police/ military dogs. And, if so, a pueblo-wide parade, ceremony and happy hour is scheduled and paid for by the pet owner.

Re: May a dog be legally buried in Mexico?
Canadian dogs have to be shipped back to Canada once the autopsy, investigation and death certificate have been completed. Of course if this takes more than 144 hours then you have to pay a fine of 25 times the Canadian minimum wage. Right now that is about $750 CDN ($20 USD).
Re: May a dog be legally buried in Mexico?
You have gotten some very good advice. Under no circumstances bury the pet in your yard. Make an appointment with Spencer. Contact the appropriate consul. Don't forget to get multiple copies of the death certificate in Spanish and your home language. Get the permit for the parade.

The easiest thing might be to just do CPR and at least it will still be "alive" (have a pulse) and you wouldn't have to go through all the legal hassles.
You may need to get some backup for the CPR though. . .

Oh, and don't forget to publish the obituary in local & foreign language newspapers. For example, if it's a Wolfhound it needs to be published in a Russian language paper; Shepard=German paper; Shitzu=Chinese paper; Setter=Irish paper .... you get the idea. And remember the DNA test will tell you if more than one foreign language paper needs to be contacted.

If you go this route (pet cemetery), to prevent this from happening, never put the last name on the headstone.
Por ejemplo.....just Fido, not Fido Gonzalez.
