Heartworm on the coast? Empty Heartworm on the coast?

I mentioned to our vet that we were taking our dogs to the coast on our vacation. He said that heartworm was very prevalent on the coast and we should treat our dogs for it. Of course this involved getting them tested for it first which is quite expensive. Apparently you can't give the dogs the heartworm medication if they already have it.

Has anyone else heard this about the coast before?
